    Posted: 21 March 2009 at 10:27am

So with Maddi's first birthday coming up next week I have decided this year I am going to give making her a cake a go.

Making cakes is one this I just cant do, I have tried and failed miserably many times before I have given up and leave it to my SIL. So I need a foolproof recipe suitable for a 1st birthday cake.

I really would love a moist rich chocolate mud cake but then I may be dreaming.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

I also have no idea what I want the cake to be, I was thinking just a number one... easy right???

Renee's "rich moist chocolate cake" is foolproof and the yummiest chocolate cake ever. It's now in my recipe binder under the heading "chocolate cake just like a bought one".

linky and I've bumped it

I saw instructions for doing a number one somewhere around here too (arohanui maybe?)

I made it into a boat shape for JJ's christening with a chocolate shortbread house on top, it shaped and iced well, because it's so moist and rich it doesn't crumble away like some recipes do.

(There are a couple of pics in this thread.)

The coffee is barely detectable, well it is in mine, I only use 1 teaspoon of instant coffee in 1 cup of hot water, and doesn't seem to affect the kids any more than all the sugar they tend to have at the same time

Should have added I baked it at 160 degrees for about an hour.
