Topic: When can I get referred to a specialist? Posted: 30 September 2010 at 1:11pm |
Hi,am wanting a bit of advice from you ladies if anyone can help. I suffered my first miscarriage in June 2010, started bleeding at 12 weeks and scan showed baby had died at 9 weeks.
I found out I was pregnant again about 2 weeks ago (I was 4 weeks pregnant) but started bleeding on Monday night just a little bit and then it stopped and I felt fine. I had a scan yesterday but was feeling quite hopeful that everything was ok as spotting had stopped. Unfortunatly scan showed baby had no heart beat,I was 6 weeks pregnant. So am now off work just waitng for miscarry to start. I talked to my midwife after my scan and asked her if I could get referred to a specialist as this was my second miscarriage. She said that you don't see a speicalist until you've had at least 3 miscarriages! Im quite surprised as surlely two miscarriages is enough!! I don't think I have it in me to fall pregnant again, lose the baby and have to have another miscarriage. For all you out there who have had 3 or more miscarriages I don't knwo how you do it, you deserve a medal. We want a baby so bad,so I won't give up but am SO scared to have another miscarriage.
To the ladies who have had two or more miscarriages did you get referred to a specialist? Do anything different? My midwide mentioned about taking low dose asprin next time I fall pregnant as this is quite common, is anyone taking this?
Thanks for your help, am still a bit shocked we lost our baby again and am just wanting some answers

you have to have 3 miscarriages before you are referred by your gp or midwife, but you can go private.
Big hugs its a really horrible thing to go through, i had 4 miscarriages between my two so i really do know the anxiety that you are feeling.
Lose dose aspirin is common but i would talk to your doctor first to make sure you are taking the right aspirin and the right dosage.
i am sorry you are going through this and i hope its all over soon and that your next baby is a sticky baby (huge hugs)

I am so sorry jannydee! Both for your loss and for the system that expects women to lose 3 babies before doing anything to help.
Can you see a specialist privately?
Otherwise things you could try include taking something like Vitex while TTC (it increases progesterone), taking baby aspirin daily as soon as you are pregnant and seeing if your doctor will give you progesterone supps to support pregnancy when you get pregnant.
Its all a bit hard though if you dont know why you lose babies, so seeing someone about it would be the best.
Wishing you a happy healthy pregnancy and baby soon!!

Hi jannydee, so sorry to see you have gone through all this it is very stressfull and I hope you are doing OK.
My experience is very much like yours, had a 12wk scan in Nov09 to see no heartbeat and baby was only about 9wks had a D&C, was UTD again in April and then lost that baby natural at 6.5wks in May10.
I already knew they can't refer you untill you have 3 so wasn't surprised but also like you I was in no way prepared to just sit back and wait to have a 3rd. So I am seeing a naturopath that sort of specialises in fertility she got me to request some bloods from my doc (who thankfully is in full support of the whole natural thing) they turned up a couple of potiental issues so she has me on heaps of herbs and supplements to help deal with these problems and I am also doing acupuncture. Basicly I am quite confident that the treatment I am getting with her is sorting out the same things as a specialist would be it's just naturally with herbs instead of meds. This is currently my first month back trying since my last MC (she wanted me to wait 3 months to give everything time to work), and am definately feeling extreamely healthy and generally confident that I am giving my next BFP the best possible chance.

Hi Jannydee
To be referred to the recurrent MC clinic you are ment to have had 3 MC in a row. As someone else mentioned you can go private, there are lots of pople who specialise inthsi sort of thing. Don't let them muck you around and ask for all the test you can get. I don't belive recurrent MC happend for no reason!
I am going through Fertility plus at the moment after 4th MC loosing twins this time, any questions just ask!
Good luck and don't give up!

Hi jannydee, so sorry to hear of your losses. It is supposed to be 3 consecutive miscarriages to get a referal, but my doctor referred me even though I had 1 miscarriage, then a successful pregnancy, then another 2 miscarriages. In the end I went private as like you I didn't want to wait 2 months for the appointment and risk losing another pregnancy in the meantime.
I am currently about 6 weeks pregnant and am doing the early pregnancy monitoring through Fertility Associates. I am taking low dose aspirin daily and also progesterone pills. Things seem to be going well so far, we have a scan next week to check progress. By this stage in all my other pregnancies I had started spotting (I even spotted and had a big bleed with Abigail), so I think the aspirin and progesterone might be helping.
I know how you feel when you say you are scared to have another miscarriage, it is in my mind ALL the time at the moment. And it doesn't seem fair that all the joy and excitement of early pregnancy has been taken away from us. I hope that your specialist appointment goes well and they can find some answers for you (be prepared for lots of blood tests!) And I also have everything crossed that your next baby is a sticky one

Hey jannydee, hope you are feeling as ok as can be expected. Just wondering if you had doubling hcg tests done? I m/c my first in april, got pregnant again and have bled from wk 7 - 11 this time. When I had a scan at 7weeks, thinking the worst, only had a gestational sac to see but Ob said this was normal for a abdo scan at that stage. Went back at 7w5d and had a heart beat and fetal pole. I've been scanned fortnightly since week 7 and things seem to be doing well.
I just thought 6 weeks was a little too early for a hb in some people. My hcg's were still doubling tho so I was given some hope and put on bed rest.
I hope, if things don't work out well, that you get your answers very soon and that you have lots of support during this time

Merlinfluff when I had my scan I had an interanl scan and the there was no heart beat. They also made these colours appear (blues, greens and reds) on the screen and they said if the baby was alive then there would be colour around the baby to indicate it was alive. I had the lady who did the scan and a doctor both confirm that there was no heart beat, so my midwife said there was no need for blood tests. I have miscarried the baby and it was just like last time with cramps, heavy bleeding and clots so know the baby has passed.
Thanks for your thoughts and advice, I have had fantastic support and am ringing the specilaist tomorrow to get the ball rolling
