Topic: Milk Supply Dropping? Posted: 17 September 2011 at 9:04pm |
Hi
DD has had a really bad flu lately, she hasn't been eating as much and sometimes only a few mouthfuls before vomitting it back up along with a lot of mucous in her throat (this happens mostly at her first morning feed where the mucous has obviously built up overnight).
To help keep up my supply and to keep her hydrdated I've been offering more feeds and expressing after each feed.
We are doing everything we can to help her sleep well so we have a vaporiser in our room (she sleeps in her bassinet in our room), baby vicks etc. and it seems to be working as she goes down between 7-8pm and has her first feed between 5.30 - 7am each morning. Usually I wake up each morning absolutely FULL to the brim, very sore and leaking everywhere but the past two mornings I've woken up feeling full-ish and not engorged and leaking as usual. Though it's much more comfortable, I'm worried my supply might be dropping. I take it I would know ALL about it if she wasn't getting enough milk? Should I be concerned?
She has only started sleeping longer again in the last 1-2 weeks, before that she was waking 2-3 times per night at least so I'm wondering if that brought my supply up again and now it's settling back down.
I'm hoping I'm just panicking for no reason - but I am desperate to feed for as long as possible and want to nip any potential problems in the bud

It could be your supply just settling. I found that as DD got older any changes in routine didn't make me as engorged/full as it used too. I could feed 3-4 hourly one night and have her sleep through the next and be fine, no leaking or engorgement. As long as she's happy I would say your producing enough milk, especially if you are able to express some after a feed.

Thanks EsmesMum, I don't usually get much after a feed (sometimes nothing at all). But she seems full after her feeds so far so I'm hoping it's just my supply settling down

It definitly settles down after a few months. If she's happy then I wouldn't worry as you'd know if you had a hungry baby. I could never get much off after a feed so that's no indication. The beauty of breastfeeding is you make what you need.

MrsEMma my supple definitely changed around that time, your body slowly starts to produce more milk on demand instead of storing it, hence we don't get as full. I stopped leaking i think around 6 months, is a real gradual process, quite scary cuz you do relaly think your supply is dropping, but trust me, it isnt I researched it to hell cuz i was so worried!! I went from a 12DD to a 10C now and still BF the hungry wee miss easily (altho they look abit saggy now sorry to say - the things you have to look forward to!)!

Has the milk supply gotten better?
Everyone told me I'd "know" if I didn't have enough milk (with DS1) but it wasn't till after he ended up fully FF that I really realised what happened. Then when it started again with #2 I was really quick off the mark and got domeperidone (sp?) from my GP. It works great and if I miss a dose by accident I notice a difference in feeding J the next day.

Thanks CJsays, I'm glad to hear that it's all very normal!! Oh yay, another side affect to having a baby (saggy boobs) lol, but it's all good - I am feeling pretty proud of myself to be BF'ing this time round so I'll take what nature gives me when I'm done
IsaacsMum my supply has pretty much settled I think, I'm still full-ish in the mornings (leaking slightly, but when she feeds and I get that first let down I'm leaking all over the show) DD now sleeps 7pm - 7am so I was paranoid and almost wanted to wake her to feed in case my supply went down. I set my alarm to wake and express around 3am for a while but stopped as I wasn't getting much out anyway. S is doing really well and sleeping fab, so much so that I haven't even contemplated solids yet.
I'm thankful it wasn't anything more than my supply settling, but I'm keeping a very close eye on it and would absolutely get the meds required if I needed to!
Are you still going well with feeding IssacsMum?

Yay for happy feeding and sleeping, glad to hear it is working out for you! Just small advice, i didnt wait till E started waking in the nite before starting solids, as i wanted her to be used to it for when she needed it (as starting on a teaspoon full of farex isnt enough to make a difference to STTN), so if she is showing all the other signs, and you think she (and you!) are ready to start, then go for it! worked perfectly for us as E just naturally got more solids and never missed a night's sleep

Good advice CJsays, funny you should say it too because I was thinking perhaps I could add it in slowly so her sleep doesn't suffer (which it shouldn't really have to, to know she's ready). She was showing signs on the weekend so on Monday I tried a couple of spoonfulls of Farex and BM which she ate. Tuesday I tried again but she wasn't keen and same yesterday. Oh well, I can only try!
