Topic: Any suggestions?? Fussy Eater. Posted: 21 October 2011 at 11:04am |
Hi there,
My son is 2yrs 7mnths now and he will not eat any vegetables at all no matter how small i try to make them. I've tried them raw n cooked but he will not eat them, when it comes to dinner all he eats is the meat off the plate. He loves his fruit without a doubt but I just feel like a bad parent coz he won't eat his veges and I don't know what else to substitute them with at meal times. He's not to keen on pasta, he likes rice. So if anyone has any recipe suggestions that may help me or any advice at all that would be much appreciated.
Thanks

My DS doesn't eat his veg either. He has fruit with dinner instead because I know he'll eat it. Grating courgette or carrot into meatballs/savoury muffins is one way that has worked - if he will eat those!
We keep offering him veg in different ways without making a fuss about it but he still isn't interested. That goes for lots of food though, not just veg. He's fussy and has a thing about textures.

DP won't eat vegies and for him a lot of it came down to the fact that his parents weren't keen on them. DD loves her veges but we always have them on our plate and we've found if we give her something different for dinner then she won't eat it - she wants the same - so we watch what we eat. Also we don't offer anything else or make a separate meal. We all eat the same thing!

Sounds just like my ds, he is a fussy little toad. I can manage to grate some vege up with pasta dishes, filled pasta. We also give fruit and veg juice. Bribery works sometimes. Fruit on the other hand, he cant get enough.

My daughter was the same and all she would eat was cherry tomatoes or raw red or yellow capsicum because they are sweet. Have you tried eith of those with your son?
I found with my daughter that if we made a fuss it would put her off the vege even more so we got to the point where we didn't stress about it and just ignored her protests.
Otherwise I wouldn't worry too much and don't feel like a bad Mum. If he is healthy and happy that is all that matters really.

My DS is really fussy when it comes to dinner as well. He does eat some veges, pumpkin, avocado, cucumber and sometimes tomatos and lettuce. And he does try things sometimes. The only meat he eats is fish, bacon, ham and sometimes mince if I feed it to him. I don't eat meat so that may be part of the problem.
One way I have found to get him to eat his veges is to put them in soup or savoury muffins.

Just to make you feel a bit better and to put things into perspective, my DD doesn't eat veges except potato, baked beans! Doesn't eat fruit except banana, and is a self proclaimed vegetarian, but does eat tuna, eggs. She is an extremely healthy little girl with the ocasional BF still and for the life of me I can't understand how they survive without the basics but she does and lots of kids do until they figure it out. She does have an issue with textures so I never push it, but DH and I do pull out hair out sometimes trying to come up with non repetitive meal ideas and snack ideas whilst keeping it healthy.

I wouldn't worry about it too much at that age. Just keep offering and let your child see you eating a large range of veges yourself, and eventually he will come around. My DD is 4 and eats a large variety of food, but is still not particularly excited about being offered 'whole' veges, such as a piece of cooked carrot, broccoli, etc. She will eat a bolognaise with grated carrot, courgette etc, and will eat raw veges in sushi, and will eat things like a red kidney bean enchilada that has diced and cooked onion and capsicum, so all in all I am not worried about lack of nutrician.

Can you sneak some veges into rice? When ds was like this we managed to sneak grated stuff into fried rice... as he loved rice!
