Hey

I'm wanting to get a new digital camera but dont know what to get. I want one that can do the foreground focus thing and extreme closeups (like of flowers etc) without being the usual fuzz mine is. (especially for TM items lol)

but I dont know where to start... what camera do you have and why do you love/hate it? I have a canon s60 powershot and its great for 'big' pictures (group shots, scenery etc) but not great for fiddly items to put on TM. and sometimes i like to try my hand at the arty type shots.

and only looking for second hand. (most likely TM) so does anyone know some dos and donts about what to ask/look for?

Go to harvey norman or somewhere like that and see what they suggest when buying a new one then go on TM and see if anything matches up to what was suggested

How much (ballpark) are you looking at spending? I like the idea of going to Harvey Normans too, although you might not be able to transfer the photos to a computer to get a good idea of the quality. Do you have friends with cameras you could play with to see if you like?

Definitely say go in and have a talk to the service peeps at a couple of different places and see what they think you will need then browse TM

oh i never would have thought of going into a store and asking around lol.

ideally looking up to about $300-$400 2nd hand. (will be saving for it lol) and will probably look in the new year for people who have gotten new cameras over xmas and are selling their old ones (of gifts they dont want lol) so have a bit of time to save hehe.

I had the same prob a couple of months back, my decent camera sh@t itself, and my back-up took really fuzzy pics, even in good light and not close-up. I would look on TM, then google reviews/specs of that particular model. For close-up shots, check the Macros distance in the list of specs, mine is 5cm (I bought a canon A470 for about $60 off TM from a cash converters store lol) so it can focus in on something as close as 5cm. Perfect for taking pics of little things like receipts (and preg tests )

Ours is a Panasonic Lumex also (sorry I'm not sure what model as I'm at work at the mo) we got it coming up two years ago and I LOVE it.
It is so easy to use and take great pics. If for any reason I had to get another camera I would be buying the same brand.

There is a guy in the US (i think) who review pretty much EVERY camera, and he has a list of 'pocket cameras' that he rates. They are all Canons. Here is his website.
I am looking at getting a digital camera for myself for Christmas, and I'll be getting a $3-400 canon too

ETA - they are called different models in US, but a google search will bring up what else they are called!

I also have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ2. Its about 5 years old but takes really good pictures (for being a relatively simple camera).

I think going into a store and speaking to sales people is a great idea. Also with the amount you are wanting to spend, you may actually be able to get what you want brand new, particularly in the new year sales.

Best of luck with your camera shopping!
