Topic: When do you call it a word? Posted: 07 July 2007 at 10:57am |
Elle is a fantastic talker and has a few words she uses regularly. However, when do you class something they say as being a word they know? She seems to copy a lot e.g. this morning I heard her saying "Faith" a few times after me (that's the cats name) and she's started saying something the sounds a lot like "hello Daddy" (it sounds like he ho da-dy) which she says almost everytime she sees Andrew.
Is it a word when they use it several times spontaneously? Is the "hello daddy" sufficient to be classed as a 2 word sentence?

We had an interview with a speech therapist and she told us that a word is a word when it communicates something.
Even if she can't say it properly, its still a word because you understood what she was telling you.

I agree with Karen. We see PAFT once a month and they also have said if they are communicating and we can understand what they are saying....they are talking.
Way to go Elle!

Yea, like if they try to say drink because they have, or want, a drink, then that is a word - because the association is there.
Hello Daddy is a two-word sentence but I wouldn't start saying that she's saying two word sentences until there were a couple of them.

I'd go with the two word sentence - sounds impressive
I mean babies don't recognise the difference between one word or two, they copy sounds that they associate with meanings. So anyway, I'd still run with it!

How many more is enough?!?!?
One 2-word sentance is talking in a sentance with comprehension (we also do PAFT), this is definitely talking! YAY ELLE!
You won't be able to stop her now

Great news about Elle's talking AND walking! As soon as she gets the nerve to let go she'll be off and you'll wonder what hit you then! LOL

I think this age is too young to worry. My Godson has only just started talking at 18months but we reckon it was because he couldn't get a word in with his big brother
But if it would help then you could get her ears checked.
