Topic: Had it up to HERE with reflux Posted: 04 October 2007 at 8:38am |
Alex is on the maxiumum dose of Losec, and his reflux symptoms have come back
(Silent reflux, no spilling just lots of screaming).
I do EVERYTHING I can to manage it - elevated bed/changetable etc, keeping him upright after feeds, cut acidic foods out of my diet, put him on AR formula, everything recommended by cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz.
There just doesn't seem to be anything anyone can do about it. I even had him in Starship for 4 days last week, and they didn't do a damn thing to make him better, and in the end just sent us home as is.
I have him booked into a paediatrician (Michael Watts??) next week, but I'm not holding out much hope there either.
Has anyone had a baby with apparently untreatable reflux before? How do I deal with this?

try zantac, losec does not work for all babies. Also could try bowen treatment as well. If you are in Auckland there is a really great paediatrician that worked wonders for a friend of mine. Also with the medicines it is often that they don't stop the spilling, just the acid production so bubs no longer hurts throwing up. Hope that you find some resolution, Jack has it and I don't think we have many things that haven't had baby vomit on them

Sorry, should have said - it's silent reflux, so no spilling, just lots and lots of screaming
Sarah Beth, are you able to PM me the name of your friend's paediatrician?

We had to use both Gaviscon and renitidine for Isla's silent reflux. The Ranitidine or losec work to decrease the ammount of stomach acid produced, and the gaviscon works on the action of the refux, helping to keep the feed and acid down in the stomach. She needed both to control it.
Have u tried going dairy free? That is also what helped us,..Isla is dairy intolerant too!
Hang in there, I know its tough. Hopefully the new Paed will have some other ideas too.
The good news is most babies grow out of it,...Isla is almost one and is no longer on any reflux meds and is happy and healthy. You would never know now from looking at her what an awful time she went through.
How old is Alex? ( sorry if its written in a ticker,..my comp wont let me see tickers!)
Remeber to try and look after yourself too. Its very tough having such an unsettled baby.

Kellz, he's 10 weeks old.
It's good to know they grow out of it! In the meantime it's pretty rough though, I just feel awful that I can't make him feel better. I'm his mum, I'm meant to be able to fix things that make him feel bad

Try not to feel guilty. Alex will know you love him and will be comforting him even tho you cant take away all the pain.
Isla's silent reflux wasnt diagnosed til she was 4 months old. 3 Drs, 2 midwives, 2 plunket nurses later,....and a trip up to an auckland plunket family centre, the lovely plunket nurses there suspected silent reflux and Isla finally got some treatment, and relief from her pain.
Im so pleased that wee Alex has been diagnosed earlier than Isla was.
Have u tried going dairy free?

Daniel has silent reflux but I've been able to completely wean him off his ranitidine. Going dairy free usually helps lots of bubbas, so does cutting wheat out apparently.

It does sound like there is more too this than simple silent reflux. I would also recommend a thickener like Gaviscon and looking into allergies.
Losec doesn't actually stop baby refluxing, what it does is it turns off some of the pumps that create the acid content in the stomach.
Products like Gaviscon turn the stomach contents into a gel which makes them less likely to be refluxed. This is different from a thickener which sit like a lump and will still be refluxed a little.
As for allergies, is he still BF? FF? Maybe you need to talk to your DR about a hypoallergenic formula like Pepti-Jnr or Neocate or even buy the Karicare HA from the supermarket to trial. If you are BF'ing then maybe start eliminating dairy, wheat and soy from your diet. As these pass through breastmilk and can cause possible allergies.
Best of luck and if you need a bit of a hand just msg me :) I am always happy to help a fellow reflux mummy!

oh hon, my heart goes out to you. My DS has silent reflux and no meds seemed to help much. Everything we tried worked for a week or so then back to either gurgling up all his food or major spewing across the room.
He is now almost 5 months old and it is much better.
I went totally dairy free which helped but didn't stop it, but recently I have cut out most wheat based products and this seemed to have made a big diff. Twice now I have had 2 big bread eatting days and then the 3 days following DS had major reflux again! SO who know if it is that or if he is growing out of it but I am def keeping as much wheat out of my diet as poss.
The other bonus is I have lost 3kgs in 4 weeks...ya hooooo
Anyway, you didn't need to know my whole story, sorry, got a bit carried away, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and I really hope it stops very soon

Yes i had a silent refluxer. We tried everything. gaviscon, ranitidine, losec. In the end it came down to something in her anatomy maturing. I think we had weaned off all meds by the time she was 14months. there is a natural product that i found a bit helpful called Rhuger a pharmacist makes it. Its ment to get the gut working properly phone number is either 08002rugher 0r 08004rugher.
Our daughter still is very refluxy and off her food (silent reflux as well) when she is sick or teething.
I second what Peace said re the pepti or neocate. Just express while you are trialling these for a week or two and see if they make a difference. If not you can always go back to breast feeding.
Also the dieticians at nutrica are fantastic and even though you arnt a bottle mum they can offer all sorts of helpful advice.
Did you know that There is probably a coffee group in your area that you can attend with other reflux mums?
I hope that you find something that works soon. It is no fun to see our little ones in such pain and not being able to do anything about it. Also it seems that the health profession cant either.
Our main trouble was with feeding and she didnt want to eat. And we did have some respite with feeding via a naso gastric tube.
My blog in those days is still on my bebo page. it was a very dark time in our lives. But things do get better and now i cant believe that our nearly 3 year old is the same girl.
Take care and feel free to PM me

Mikaela one of the girls at my coffee group has a daughter that had terrible problems with reflux and colic. She saw a paediatrician and the baby is on some medication, as well as losec, and she is as good as gold now. So the paediatrician is a good move I think, I hope he can help.

Aw chick, hang in there. Like Kellz said, it's blimmin hard work having a high-needs baby and reflux like that sure sounds like high needs to me. Go easy on yourself as much as possible! I hope the Paediatrician can offer some help. Ella is on Ranitidine for her reflux (which isn't silent) and it works well for her. but like people have said, different meds work (or don't) for different babies. Also, could it be colic giving him trouble as well? Maybe a few colic 'remedies' are worth a try on top of the reflux treatments? A friend of mine got relief from colic symptoms by taking her baby to the osteopath.
