Topic: Little bit of help please. Posted: 23 July 2010 at 4:04pm |
I've decided to try cloths again after trying old-fashioned flats on all my babies so far & having their eczema go rampant. Currently I'm looking at either Babyland "new style" osfa pocket nappies off tm (pul outer, microfleece inner, microfibre insert), are they any good? With our laundry I use ecostore wash powder, vinegar as the rinse, ecostore whitener as my soaker, & everything goes in the dryer. Use sudocream occasionally. What should I be aware of? What else do I need? Liners? TIA

Oh, and what are the ones you can get from Countdown like? Thanks, =). I'll be using cloths on my almost two year-old, then hopefully on our newest dd due in Nov. Thanks again, =).

My DD gets ezcema.
I mainly use the mybaby ones of TM and find them fantastic.
I used the real nappies for the first few months which were great but didn't like them as she got older. Once she was big enough for her OSFA I stopped using them but have saved them for #2

Hey tictacjunkie, I use the babylands ones- make sure you do get the 'new style' ones as they have the extra leg snaps. I have had no trouble with them, they only leak if I dont change them regularly (and thats hardly ever). In the info thing they day you cant put them in the dryer, we dry ours above the fire on a clothes rack. I dont use liners, i just rinse the poo off and hang them in the sun to bleach them. HTH

Good on you for trying MCN again! DD has been in them since birth - and we love cloth!!
Be aware that ecostore powder has oils and stuff in it that can coat the nappy, but with the vinegar rinse it would strip them.... would you use vinegar every wash???
I don't soak our nappys - dry pail, only rinse dirty ones....
As for liners - either flushable, or reusable - I use suede or microfleece liners, that get biffed in the wash with the rest of the nappy... as well as the cloth wipes!
As for the ones at Countdown - we live in West Auckland, and so received some nappies from the hospital when we were there - which were the RN ones. I really liked them - like someone else said - when DD was little - as she got bigger, have switched to pockets, and fitteds with covers.
Hope that helps!

Thanks! Trying to get myself organised but having a particularly bad patch of babybrain! I use the vinegar for most washes (pretty much all except my clothing). I'd wondered whether the pul would be dryer friendly- I'll prob use the clotheshorse for them then. I've already bought a few boxes of newborn disposables so probably will only buy pocket nappies then. Thanks again, =).

Really!!! What powder do you use?
I've been really unhappy with eco store toploader stuff for the last couple of months. I got the normal one & am using it half strength to see if that is better.
Sorry to thread jack

AandCs mum I use persil sensitive as it seems to be the only powder that DD doesn't react to. I double rinse when I was ittis though to make sure all the residue is out. I am looking into getting some soapnuts to try as well.
tictacjunckie PUL dries pretty quickly so you will be fine with them on the clothes horse. We don't have a drier so I don't have a choice!

I was using Persil Sensitive on my nappies but they started to get squeeky so I switched to ecostore and no more squeek.
I always do an extra rinse too.

I have a frontloader so use ecostore frontloader- prob a different mix? Used to use persil sensitive when we had a toploader but found it still made the kids react (& I found it really expensive). I do extra rinse as well, to get rid of any vinegar smell. Glad to know they dry quickly! We have neighbours who smoke pot outside, & seem to have a burn-off of goodness knows what (car parts etc) whenever it's fine (they're unemployed boyracers, yaaay.) So gave up using clothesline awhile ago.

I don't know about if there is a difference but eco store caused Es ezcema to flare. I'm too scared to try cheaper brands while persil is working. DP also has ezcema and persil is one of the only powders he can use too.

Must be different for everyone! Ecostore we've found no problems with eczema, Surf was ok as long as it went through extra rinses, we have no problems wearing perfume/cologne, but have a friend who can't wear anything with alcohol in it without her eczema going crazy.

Hiya - yep - ecostore has oils in it - lovely for clothes - it's what I use, but for nappies I stick with sensitive powder - usually not persil as it is quite "sudsy" - and for doseage - I use 1/2 to 1/4 of the recommended dosage for the size of load - ie 1/2 load nappies - about 1/4 scoop of powder

PUL is fine in the dryer - in fact - brand new nappies can benefit from being put in the dryer a few times, as it helps seal the tiny sewing holes (which some people find leak, though I never have!)
Honestly though, pul covers dry some quickly, I wouldn't waste the dryer power!

Amolin liquid is awesome for those with excema or sensitive skin, and great for nappies too! Haven't needed to strip them at all, just a couple of times when I've accidently added too much (thanks to baby brain!) I've rinsed one or two more times.

I found Next Generation wonderful for excema. Plus you need so little in the wash. You will also need canestin or dettol antibacterial in your wash every so often to get rid of baterial that does build up - mainly for the smell.
Anyway, I have not heard of those nappies, but I use Nudey Rudey brand osfa. I can't say enough good things about them. But even if you don't buy this brand, check out her website as she gives a great recipe for stripping nappies - essential if you need to use nappy creams.
Another tip, if you decide to use nappy liners, I recommend you buy some soft fabric and make your own, as a lot of the disposable types will cause nappy rash. I used the flushable type for a short while, until I realised they were the nappy rash problem. I haven't had a problem since! Completely wonderful NOT having to use creams on his bottom - oh, Caleb is 7 months old and has been wearing these nappies since 2 weeks old.
Anyway, good luck with the cloth nappies. I am NEVER going back!!

Don;t use the vinegar every wash with your nappies. It breaks down the pul layer faster and makes then more prone to leaks.
If you use the Sudocream use a flushable liner or similar in the nappie against the skin or the cream will build up in the nappie and cause leaks.
I've used the eco store powder for 2 years now on nappies and have never had any probs. My girl reacted to even scented wipes on her bum.
