Topic: What not to wash your cloths naps in Posted: 28 August 2010 at 8:31pm |
Just thought I would mention this. that apparently eucalyptus oil. citrus oil and baking soda break down the pul lining on nappies.
My new stash of Baby Cheeks waterproof lining have started to peel away after 2 months and I have contacted the supplier and was told It by using these products that this has happened.
I personally find it hard to believe as my other stash(the older version) have had no adverse reactions to using these products but this is what I have been told by them has caused the new ones to do this but they don't state not to use these on the packaging.
If anyone else is using a Pul outer nappies and use these products please tell me if your outers have started to do this.
I use all natural cleaners on my nappies and have found most natural washing powders or products have one or two of these in them.
Just thought I'd let you know but I'd like to hear if anyone else has had any issues with the same thing happening even to other brands.

It is a hard call this one as everyone has a different opinion about what is best and what is not.
I think in your case seeing as other nappies in your stash have not had the PUL starting to peel away, you can safely say this is due to poor quality PUL.
As a general rule of thumb with any washing powder - choose a sensitive style powder that has no enzymes or fabric softeners in them.
Using essentials oils should not damage your nappies.
Powders with high baking soda levels have been said to cause damage to natural fibres like bamboo and hemp.
Personally I have used about every brand available that is under $5 on my nappies and none have had damage caused to them. The issues I have had is from poor quality workmanship.

I used to have two Baby Cheeks nappies that I bought last year some time, and one of those developed what sounds like the same problem. The inside side of the PUL started peeling off in places, and it was the only nappy of mine that this has happened to. I've never used eucalyptus or citrus oils in my nappy washes, and I think I stripped some of my nappies only once, with baking soda and white vinegar in the wash. So I'm pretty confident it wasn't baking soda or anything else that caused the problem.
I sold both nappies, as they weren't a good fit on my son, so I couldn't say if the problem got worse, or if the other one developed the same problem too. But my personal opinion is that the PUL was of poor quality, which is not good enough considering the price that they charge for Baby Cheeks nappies. Sounds like those people are trying to fob you off, shame on them!

Yeah well I'm trying to see if other people have had or are having the same problem. Nice to know that you did too

Hmm apparently the company that makes PUL has changed hands and they have changd the specifications and the PUL is only supposed to last 35 washes now. SO if the older version is fine and the newer ones aren't perhaps the changeover has already happened.

It can't be 35? I'm sure it can't be Maybe 350? They have recently redone the packaging I just noticed, didn't get any though 'cos they're not my favourite at all

I use both tea tree and lavender essential oils on my cloth naps and they seem fine so far. 35 washes! I wouldnt bother with them if they only lasted that long.
