Topic: Farmers Markets Posted: 24 July 2010 at 2:38pm |
Not sure if this is within the rules?
DH and I are going to be living in Akl later this year, and we want to start getting our fruit and vege etc from the local Farmers Markets.
I also think it would be a great thing for us to do as a family once our baby is here.
However I don't know where all the different Farmers Markets are located in Akl.
Is it possible to start a list of where they're located, what day they're held, and if they're suitable for taking a buggy.
TIA

Here is a list of all the Farmers Market NZ markets. Would be interesting to hear how people rated them.

Farmers markets up here are not really "farmers" markets as such. They are much more about selling gourmet and organic products from small producers. The products are gorgeous and delicious but not cheap. We have been to quite a lot of the markets that are central, and all are buggy friendly (it can be pretty busy, buut buggies are great for cutting through the crowd!)
We buy all out veges from greengrocer (there are heaps of these around auckland), and its much cheaper that the supermarket.
Hope this helps!

I agree. I think the only market that you would get cheaper fruit and vege would be Avondale (please correct me if I am wrong as it has been years since I have been) but it is VERY busy

We'll be in west akl and there are lots of growers out there, its as much for a family outing and to try something new as it is to save $$.
Thanks for that list Fliss.

There's also Avondale and Takapuna markets on Sundays and Otara markets on Saturdays. Haven't been to the Takapuna ones but I think they have a mix of good veges as well as other more interesting stuff.

We are out west too and I always pass the Oratia Farmers Market - I haven't been myself (but have been meaning to for ages) I've heard really good things though and it's always pretty busy.
It's at Artisan Wines, here's the link Oratia Farmers Market

We just passed the Oratia one yesterday and said we should check it out too.
Just checked out that link and now I'm even more inspired to go. Will put it on my list for this weekend

Farmers markets are a nice day out - but I agree re: cost. We go to flea markets for fruit and vege at great prices.
I really enjoy the clevedon farmers market and la cigale in parnell for a day out.

Avondale is supposedly good for veges but you have to get there really early. I am never that organised. West Auckland (off the end of the motorway) has heaps of good fruit n veg shops though. I sometimes drive all the way out there from our place in central auckland.

Have been to the Oratia market and it's really good, you should defnitely go there.
The one in Parnell is ok, haven't tried any others. Oratia definitely your best bet being out west

I def recommend the Oratia market. Its quite small, but there are some great regular stalls there, along with the cafe and also Just Plane Interesting (curios shop), which is definitely worth a look! We used to run a stall for a friend selling organic beef and lamb and it has a really good atmosphere.
I believe Avondale is worth a look- funny, we live in the area but have never been to the market- its sooooooo busy (we drive past when we forget its on) but my bro in law goes every week for their regular shop and gets some great bargains.
