We had a call from the ENT specialist today and he has been reviewing Sienna's notes and he wants her to see a speech therapist.
Has anyone taken their toddler to one? What do they do? I'm not *too* worried about her speech at this stage, yes she talks/babbles less than Mercedes and probably only has around 1/2 dozen proper words, but I'm sure she'll figure it out in time, plus she tends to be Miss Attitude - I think she thinks she's too COOL to talk lol.
But I'll take her just coz the specialist said we should, I'm just interested to know what they do with kids her age?

I'm not to sure what they do with kids her age but I remember I had to go see one before I started school not sure how old I was when I started to see her and we just went through an exercise book on trying to say things the right way maybe they will give you activities or something to encourage her speech good luck with your visit.

My friend has been looking at taking her 2 1/2 year old to on as he doesn't talk much. But since she has thought about taking him his speech has improved.

I didn't think they took young children as it was quite hard, they usually wait until they are a bit older.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

That's what I thought. Preschool had Maya evaluated by a speech therapist at 4 coz she has a lisp but they said she'd grow out of it once she gets her adult teeth coz they'll force her tongue back into her mouth when she talks.
But how do you assess a 19 mth old?

Josh had to have speech theraphy but that didn't start till he was around 3 1/2 years. My friends lil girl has speech theraphy (shes nearly 3) and has done for around a year but thats because she is slower developementally due to servere epilepsy.

I would wonder how they would assess a 19 month old as even rhyley doesn't say loads of word (sure its heaps if I added them up). Doesn't hurt to see what they have to say anyhow.

One of my best friends is a speech therapist. She works in Pediatrics and quite often has young children. Will ask her for you and PM you.

He has finally started to talk! I think he has gone from pretty much no words to ten in a couple of weeks. I know that is still HEAPS slower than most children that age but I am just relieved that he is saying some. He understands so much and follows instructions and points when you say "wheres the ...." We have a pediatrician app for the 25 June but I guess I ll see closer to then whether we still need it or not. I really do think that other than the talking everything is fine. I know they are all different but what do the general guideline things say they should be doing with regards to speech by 18 and a half months?
Have emailed my friend so will let you know what she says. I remember when I asked her with Ollie she didn't think there was much they would do at this age but will ask again.

Yay Ollie!
Sienna probably has 6-10 words, but she doesn't seem to pick things up as fast as Mercedes, altho tonight she got on my knee and said "row, row, row" coz she wanted me to do row row row your boat with her, which is a new word.
Mercedes has more words but still not a lot compared to Maya at their age, altho she makes more noises in general, she growls and babbles nonsense which is a good start.
