Topic: TTing - more accidents in the morning? Posted: 22 May 2008 at 7:50pm |
Here's a strange one (or perhaps not?!?!)
Caitlin is fully dry in the afternoons at day care and at home but in the mornings she has 4-5 accidents (that's between 8am and 11.30am when she has a nappy on for nap time)
Daycare suggested we put her in pull ups which I refuse to do! I honestly don't see the point it them. It will just confuse her and she'll think it's ok to wet myself sometimes which defeats the whole purpose of toilet training IMO.
Any other suggestions from you experienced TT'ers

Not an experienced TT'er here but I'll add my 2 cents anyway.
Are the people at daycare telling her to sit on the toilet often enough or at the right times? From what I understand alot of the early stages of TTing is more about well trained adults rather than well trained kids.
Regarding pullups we've decided to use pullups for outings and naptimes/nightime sleeps as I read that switching children from nappies to underpants can be confusing for them.

They're asking her if she wants to go every 30 mins and if she still says no up to 45 minutes they take her themselves.
Unfortunately, it's between the 30-45 mins she's having the accidents.
That's interesting about the pull ups being less confusing than undies. Did you read that on the web? do you know the link?

I'm not really sure where I read it as I've been all over the place looking for TTing advice. Recently I've read Dr Christopher Greens Tips for Taming Toddlers I could have read it there, then again I may have read it on the huggies website in which case their profitting from their advice so no wonder they suggest it... but it did make sense to me and the cost is only a wee bit more than the disposables which we were previously using.
The other tidbit of advice I gleaned was not to ask, instead tell a child it's time to sit on the potty/toilet because given the choice between playing or going to the toilet then they'll always choose playing.
I agree that putting her in pullups during awake times is a step backward. It sounds to me like the daycare staff need to start telling her it's time to go instead of asking her then waiting for the accident.

We actually did the pull up thing but we called them undies and used them as underwear (so if we did have an accident it was contained). She loved them and was rapt she could get them up and down herself. I would actually recommend them.
And you can get them from the likes of Countdown, they aren't the huggies brand but the signature range, and we found them just as good (and about half the price)

You didn't find that she used them like nappies?
DH used them during the day yesterday and she didn't actually wet in the potty at all. Although I don't think he made her sit on the potty often enough or at the right times so maybe it's another case of training the adult before we can train the toddler.
How long was it before Charlotte went from pullups to normal undies?

As emailed to Jo - but I thought I would share here too!
After re reading my post, it was a bit inaccurate, I mean that we used pull ups when out - read on.....
We had accidents and LOTS of them! At first she didnt understand the 'feeling' that she needed to go to the toilet.
We actually started putting her in underwear straight away rather than pull ups but in those initial days of TT we would put her in pull ups to go out (to the supermarket for example) but still ask every hour if she needed to go potty. Because she was having fun while learning, we would spend a lot of time going back and forth to the toilet with very little happening when out and about.
We didn't make a big deal of the accidents and a huge deal of the successes. We even had some part successes, her sitting on the potty fully clothed and going. But it was a great start! Lol.
We had heaps of washing to do but it was worth it in the end.
I would recommend the following:
Stick Michaela in undies from now. Accept that there are going to be accidents. It took us about 3 weeks to really get into it properly and its very rare now we have an accident. If you can get Iain into it, dont use pull ups like nappies at home....
Keep the house warm and let her get around with no pants on, leave the potty in the lounge and encourage her to sit on it reguarly. I forked out $20 for a potty because it was a bit bigger and has a head (its like a swan) which she can hold onto the handles, she LOVES it to bits. It also has a tray that you pull out and carry to the toilet. Char is was very involved in that bit too and loves to flush it all away!
Also, Char has "toilet signs" like she grabs her crotch area and that is when I know she needs to go. At first it was like "I need to go....oh, I went in my pants" kind of thing but then after about a week, she started to realise that she needed to go and I also recognised the signs and would say "need to go potty?" then have a mad dash to get there. Sometimes we made it sometimes we didnt.
We also made a big deal of big girls go in the potty not their nappies like babies. I think there are books you can get around this kind of thing too.

And we still use pull ups at night too, which she loves because she is in control of putting them on and taking them off. Plus, its only about twice a week she actually wets in them.

thanks for posting that Georgina - was insteresting reading.
We're sticking with undies as she is pulling those up and down herself ok. We even ventured out yesterday to the mall and has no accidents!!!!! WOO HOO!
She's even started to tell us "wees/poos". We then make a mad dash around looking for the closest toilets and have made it in time
She been 99% dry this weekend (a bit of a leak but still went on the toilet) that's why we took the risk of going out. I was worried though as a lot of my mates have kids that refuse to go on public toilets
My mum said that now Caitlin is pretty much dry, I should put her down for her 1 hour afternoon nap in undies. Her nappies have been pretty much dry for a while now (we use cloth nappies so it's obviously dry) but I'm not too sure just yet.
What do you guys reckon?
