LR- I'm pretty passionate about those subjects too! Have you read much from Peter Singer?

Did you know that women and children used to come under the same protection as animals?

That they were the groups that the RSPCA was originally set up for.

Completely off topic - however I do think NZ's attitude towards the protection of women, children and animals speaks volumes on how much we value them.

Personally I don't think we value them enough. For the abusers moving from an animal to a child or their partner isn't a great moral leap.

LR- yeah he's a philosopher and I guess an animal rights activist...however he writes on a number of very controversial ethical subjects, he has written a fantastic book called Practical Ethics and that has his take on the euthanesia (sp) debate. And Animal Liberation is the most revolting book I have ever read- in that the subject matter is hugely disturbing- . Everything he writes makes me think long and hard, that's for sure. I really reccommend him if you think you might like to be challenged (which I def was and I"m pretty liberal!)

C&J- you're so right about abusers  Yeah it's totally OT but maybe deserves another thread of it's own..... (hint hint  )

I think its a pretty effed up world we live in when a person who abused an innocent 3 year old , gets out after 3 measly years in jail .

Did anyone watch Oprah the other day ? THAT was shocking . It was about cases in 3rd world countries and how badly the women are treated, I knew they were, but I hadn't heard individual horror stories

1st one -mother of 3, has the misfortune of getting pregnant , baby dies inside her , she needs emergency C section , dr refuses unless he is paid $100, journalist that is there at the hospital pays, AND donates his blood cos she needs a transfusion .
Dr leaves for the night without performing it, journalist finds woman 3 hours later in her own faeces, vomit and urine , she got the c section the next day , but the baby had poisoned her blood stream and she died 2 days later

second woman -nearly starved to death , was raped by soldiers (that seems to be their weapon of choice against women ) and cos of this she was seen as unworthy and undesireable
She also died

3rd girl , this was horrible , kidnapped at 13 from her village, taken to brothel , she was a virgin when she was sold the first time, she was sold as a virgin FOUR times, they would sew up her vagina after each intercourse .
Women in those places aren't allowed to ask for condoms, so she got pregnant twice, second time they did an abortion at 4 months ,in excruciating pain , she asked if she could have one night off, the doctor stabbed her in the eye , blinding her and disfiguring her, no longer desirable , she was kicked out onto the street .
She was picked up by some sort of organisation (the good kind ) and given a second chance at life shes still scarred mentally and physically tho .
Oh , and the brothel was run by the chief of police .

Yeah , its a sick world we live in , both here , as far as the rights of victims ,and children etc go , and further as far as women living in places where they are seen as less than men , go .
But its also a good world, cos there are always people who want to fight for justice and what is right ....might take awhile to change the world, probably wont happen while we're alive, but at least we are on the right track , I take some comfort in that

oh , and im sorry ....banning junkfood ?? bu bu..but ...what will I eat !!!

I would have been one very hungry little pixie this past 7 months if I there was a ban on McDs. There food has been one of the few things I've been able to have when I've wanted to buy my lunch. Pretty much everything else at your average shopping centre food court is off limits with pregnancy.

I wasn't keen on processed meat at McD's so I didn't eat it when I was pregnant. Yes, it's frustrating when you're pregnant about what to eat when you're out and about. I had a whole list of things I got my DH to bring in once I'd had DS: sushi, custard squares being two I remember. But even just salad sandwiches bought from the shop!

Kelly - what countries were those women from?

I'm not really going to say much about the actual topic....but OMG Peter Singer - I did two 2nd year ethics papers at Waikato Uni, and he wrote the text book for both (one of which was Practical Ethics that you have brought up, Emmecat). It was awesome reading, and definitely made you think!!!
