DS is fully BF, but I would like to have some formula for the times that I go out and cant get back to him in time for a feed.

He has eczema and pretty bad allergies and we are still waiting to see a paed. In the meantime I would like to have some formula on hand just in case. Our stash of EBM has almost run out!

I thought of goats milk formula but havent found any positive feedback on it at all. Im not sure if he will react to a normal formula but I guess I could try the little single packs they have?

I was told by my pead not to bother with goats milk formula because its so close to cows milk that if they are going to react to cows milk...they will react to the goats milk.

The little single packs could be a go....but you would need to give him 2-3 feed before you know if you are going to get a reaction. (bit of trial and error, which we had with Cory, bit of a nightmare really)

Cory ended up on neocate (which you can only get through a pead if you want it cheap) or its around $100 a tin not subsidised

It took a few days for Cooper to react to goat as well, mind you I had not tried him on dairy before hand other than via breast milk.

So I'm picking that he's got issues with Dairy? if so I wouldn't bother trying goat as the proteins are so similar. Have you tried having soy in your diet & seeing how he reacts? That would be the next option.

Personally I wouldnt risk it. I express every morning as I dont want to risk DS reacting to formula, and I work 9hrs one day a week so need to have ebm for when Im at work. I only get about 40-50mls off each morning after his feed, so it takes a while to get enough for a bottle!

I was expressing each morning and getting enough for a bottle (200 - 240 mls) each day but lately he has decided to take both sides in the morning. I could try expressing and adding the milk together.

Im not sure if dairy is an issue - I dont drink/eat a huge amount but I dont really want to risk it. Thats good to know about the goats formula - might try drinking soy milk myself and see how he goes.

So you've seen no relationship between his ezcema/allergies and dairy that you eat? If that is the case the Paed will get you to try dairy based formula or soy formula first.

We'd already knew that C had issues of dairy from my breast milk plus we'd tried and failed both goat & soy so the only option left was for me to keep breastfeeding or get neocate.

They might take one look at his ezcema and give you a script for neocate but I found I had to jump through hoops to get it. Just thought I'd prewarn you as it's not an easy process at times.

Also I guess depending on what his other allergies are.

if you are going to try a formula the best one you can get from the supermarket for allergies is the HA one as it's been hydrogonised (sp?) which means the protein has been partially broken down meaning they are less likely to react to it, pepti junior and neocate which are the script ones have been broken down futher still, pepti has been broken down to peptic acids and neocate to amino acids.

Someone posted on here about people selling neocate on trademe, which I totally don't agree with, but it could be a way of getting a few tins without the script and without paying $100, they are only 400g tins for that $100 too. Then you will be able to ask the paed when you see them for the script. If you are breastfeeding they are reluctant to give it out so you are best to say that you are stopping even though you aren't so that you can get the script, or at least make it clear that you will no longer be feeding fully cos of working and not being able to express so that they give you the script.

I was told by my Pead that if its a dairy intolerance than 80-90% of children will also react to Goats milk and 40-50% of kids will also react to soy. So soy is the best bet.

I had no problems getting a script for neocate but was FF anyway so that may have helped also the fact that he was 8/9 months by the time I saw a paed and was very specific in what I was saying may have helped.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info ladies. We have waited about 2 months for the appt so I hope something comes of it. I really want to get an allergy test done so we know what he is allergic to. I have cut heaps out of my diet so I could add things back in for a week or 2 and see if her reacts. The other option is to see a naturopath, which I might do anyway.

Wow, I didnt realise neocate was so expensive!

I would definitely go with the giving up breastfeeding story if you can.

Also if her skin is clear now, take evidence of what happens when you have dairy etc.

Allergy tests can be called by your GP, I wasn't aware of that til Two_Boys pointed it out.

Just phoned the paed to confirm our appointment date, but we still dont have one! We were told 6 weeks from the end of June so I might just find a naturopath that can do allergy testing for us. Went to see my GP today and she suggested Karicare HA so I might see if I can get hold of a sample and try it out.

kinesology (sp) is what you are looking for.

Give the HA a go, that's the one Two_boys suggested.

I found the Nan HA at countdown so will give it a go, and we got our paed appt yay! And I think we will cut out solids again - his poos have turned very green and mucosy over the past week after having farex and rusks 1-2 times a day.

Check the farex/rusks for dairy or soy.

Check out the organic shops they normally have rusks and other baby foods that are allergy free. Organic for some reason tends to also be free of allergens. Binn inn stock a lot of the organ range, which is gluten free, but also happens to not have dairy, soy, egg etc. Some supermakets stock as well but not always a big selection. My boys both love the outback crackers (as do I).

I would follow a weekly introduction gap, so only one new food every 7 days. so say just baby rice for a week until you are sure no reaction then add in another food, so he could then have baby rice and pear and just stick to that for a week and the next food. Is a bit of a pain in the butt but makes it so much easier to identify and eliminate problem foods. Good to keep a dairy too, good for you and also good to take along to any appointment so you have it all documented and can refer to.

I will start a diary - I now know the baby rice does not agree with him! We stopped it a few days ago and his poos are slowly returning to normal. Tried zuchinni last night - not planned - when we were out for tea. He held bits of it and happily munched away and looks fine this morning. Im reading the BLW book at the mo, and think that might be the way to go with DS.

BLW is great, I kind of did that with my youngest, was gonna do the purees like I did with the oldest, had even done all the cooking and freezing, but he decided that he hated the highchair and the spoon, so we ended up doing all finger foods (everything was finger food, even cereal and dinner) and him self feeding with the spoon, was very messy to start with but he is such a great eater now. And it's not too hard to co-ordinate with allergies either.

Zuchinni is low allergy so hopefully will be all good

Hmm - well allergy tests showed up wheat, egg white and cows milk. The Nan formula was giving him very swollen lips so we stopped that after 2 feeds. I might try soy next and if that doesnt work get something from the paed.
