Topic: Overflow in Prefold Posted: 19 January 2010 at 10:14am |
Mac is 6 weeks old and we've started using our prefold nappies but I'm finding whenever he does number 2's it's overflowing on to the outer.
What am I doing wrong?
I should also mention I'm using the Johnsons nappy liners over the inners and I'm wondering if maybe they aren't absorbent enough so end up pushing it all out?

Are you just laying the prefolds inside the cover or are you using a snappi? Do you mean they're leaking out altogether or just getting on the inside of the cover? Unfortunately sometimes it's just going to get on the covers
Not sure about the effect of the liners, unless they're interfering with getting a good fit around his bum...?

I use them inside a cover. They just leak into the cover...luckily. I would have thrown them out by now if they were leaking out onto his clothes.
I'm going to try a different liner, a softer one and see how that goes.

When I referred to a snappi, I meant like one of these:
There are instructions here - might be worth a shot? They're pretty inexpensive, you can get them from places like the baby factory.

you will find you get a much better fit if you snappi the prefold on rather that pad folding and laying in the cover. they tend to bunch up a bit.

Might give it a whirl. Also getting some boosters for night time so might add an Snappi to the order.

I'm using prefolds on C at night and have been since I bought her home. I use the snappi, and make sure they are pulled up tight around her legs. I'm not using a liner. I still get small leaks onto the covers with the really big poos (about once a day), but mostly it's fine.
It doesn't really bother me anyway - I change the cover every change to let the other one air out. (I only wash it if it's dirty though, usually just leave it to air). I have 4 covers, and I've not run out yet, but I am washing every 2 days. I'm using other nappies from the hire kit during the day.
Can I ask why you are using a liner? You can just throw the prefolds into the wash dirty - so what does the liner achieve?
ETA. Totally off topic, but weegee, I love your signature!

Liner makes poo removal easy, pick it out of the nappy & then straight down the loo, but J&J liners aren't flushable.
Amstaff, you might find that poo will leak into the cover anyway depending on the coverage of the inside bit over his bum. Long as it's not leaking onto his clothes then all good???
(I've not used prefold, only old fashioned flats,)

I am having the same situation. My boy is now 7 weeks and I've been using the prefolds since he was 3 weeks. I find most big poos spill onto the inside edge of the cover on one side or the other and have decided it is just part of the territory. I use the prefolds wrapped with a snappi under the cover and also use flushable liners (purchased from Nature Baby) - it definitely reduces the amount of goop that needs to be washed off!
I wash every 2 days with a set of 18 prefolds and 4 covers. A few more would definitely make life easier. I use disposables overnight to make my life easier for the middle for the night change and because they keep him drier through the longer sleeps.
I would love to know if anyone has tried both prefolds and old-school flats if the flats are more effective? I'm tempted to get some as they will fit my boy right through rather than having to keep buying another size of prefolds.

Depends what you mean by 'more effective' really Yes properly folding a flat contains more than a prefold, but that's just because there's more fabric there to fit around/hold it, if you get what I mean. That also means you do have to get the hang of folding them, and they're much bulkier but that's not so much of an issue with a tiny wee one.
I will say it's totally worth getting some cloth flats anyway - even if you never put them on baby's bum they are really useful for nappy off time, for mopping up spills, for burp cloths etc. And you can pad fold them and use them inside pockets once they're bigger too

I too have that problem. Only really gets on the cover with her big ones now and I have been using a snappy. I think I've gotten better at putting it on which helps too.
If it's just a little bit I scrub with sunlight soap and leave to dry so that I can use it again before I do the nappy wash.

Definitely try a snappi, prefolds would not have worked for us without a snappi. But I still got a bit of poo on the covers with a bit poo.
Ariane - I found that once Sophia got to about 5 months she was soaking prefolds and got heaps of leaks, but she seems to be a heavy wetter. I ended up by yoyo pocket nappies. But I have just been investigating the pefold thing again as we have number 2 on the way and I am going to try a bamboo sqaure as a prefold or put a yoyo doubler or something in the prefold to get a bit more absorbancy. (Have a look at yoyo.com if you want).Sorry that got a bit off the topic! All I mean was before you do buy the next size up in prefolds you may want to look at ways of making the prefold more absorbant.
