Topic: Best Cloth Nappy to try for Beginner Posted: 31 January 2010 at 9:21pm |
Ok - I remember saying that I'd never use cloth nappies because I didn't think I could be bothered. BUT, since having a look at a friend's collection, I have to admit, they are kinda cool!
So, where do I start? I'd like to try just a couple of pocket nappies to start with (that aren't tooo expensive) to see how I like them. DS is 5 months old and his legs are probably on the skinnier side. Which brand do you guys recommend?
You girls will obviously know best!
ETA: And what's the consensus on domes vs velcro?

Hmm thinking back to Jaxon.. I found honeychilds and fuzzi's suited jakes chicken legs... they are what I bought first and they worked so I didnt try any other pockets really. I dont like velcro.. sticks to everything in the wash so I went for domes.

I've heard of velcro causing rashes and rubbing the skin raw if you don't have it on right.
Sorry can't help much more than that, but I've gone for Pea Pods which have domes - am yet to test them as bubs hasn't been born yet

Over velcro & it's only on my emergency stash now. Mind you it was ok for non moving newborns.
Snaps are way easier.
I love Itti's but they are more expensive unless you can pic up second hand.

we only have fizzis and a couple of honey childs. They are great and very simple. I prefer snaps to the idea of velcro, as melnel said, it sticks to everything in the wash.

Can't help with the brands sorry, but I'm gonna be different and say I prefer velcro! My bubba tries to escape as soon as she's lying down and I find it quicker to do up a velcro nappy than try and hold her still longer while figuring the snaps out hehe.
But then, I make my own nappies so have put fold in tabs on the arms so they don't stick to anything in the wash!

velcro is good, especially if it crosses over cause you can get a good fit then. most velcro nappies have cross over tabs so they dont stick in the wash. and i have never heard of a velcro nappy rubbing a baby raw, after all it is not directly on their skin.
however a lot of kids learn to take velcro nappies off quite early so that becomes a problem.
pea pods are a god cheap nappy and you can see them in real life at baby factory, who also do a few other brands of MCN so its good to go and have a look. with pea pods though people seem to either love or hate them. I had one with eden and found it rather large for a small so she was a bit older when she could wear it. I love their bamboo inserts though they are great.
i have a swaddlebee pocket nappy here, it uses snaps and is very slim in the crotch so may be good for a slim legged bubba. i can send that to you if you want. however i dont know if anyone stocks them here anymore and it is a small.

Pea Pods don't have a good reputition and are not the best brand to start on.
My advice is to look at the types you like the look of and buy one of each.
Each nappy will each baby differently so what works for your friends may not work on your child. So it is really important to try out several brands before going out and buying 15 of one brand that you have no idea will fit bubs or not.

I can also heap with putting together a trial pack of some of the best cloth nappy brands available in NZ.

I would recommend honey child - they are not the cheapest, but you can pick up some good deals on trademe. the thing that is good about them is they have a set of snaps for the waist and one for the legs so its easier to get the fit right. I tried itti and they were useless for me as they only had the one set of domes at the waist and they were too gapey around the legs.
If you are willing to wash everyday then you don't need as many (perhaps 9 ?). I use disposables at night as I can't be bothered stuffing the nappy with all those boosters just so they can last through the night.
Seeing as your boy is 5 months old already you might go straight to the size large, if not then mediums

as i said before people either hate or leave them. They are an excellent price and their inserts are fabulous.

lousie i might be interested in a trial pack of nappies, how much will it cost, and how many nappies will there be, maybe i should just bring bubs over to your place when he is born and then you can suggest what types would probably be best for his size/shape etc.

Thanks guys for all your help - looks like the best option is to try a few different brands and then stock up on the ones I like the most. I might have to try a dome and velcro version to see which I like as well. Wish me luck - I'll keep you posted
