Holiday with baby

	Hi, My DH and I and our 8 month old DS are planning a holiday for next month. I would love to hear from anyone who can recommend good holiday desinations and accommodation in NZ that are baby friendly. Also, any tips from your experiences trying to have a relaxing break with a baby. Thanks heaps!

	We haven't been away on a holiday since DS was 8 weeks old (when werbooked a bach at Waihi Beach for a week), but are considering taking a break this winter, when he will be about 1. We haven't booked yet, but have been thinking about it a lot, and have come up with the following criteria: -Self-contained accommodation - ie: somewhere to cook evening meals, as we won't be able to go out for dinner and keep to DS's night time routine. We'd also like somewhere 'nice' so that we enjoy spending the evenings there, just the 2 of us - so with views, movies, fireplace etc... -Lots of stuff to do / places to visit during the day that is baby-friendly -Accommodation that is close to town / activities (don't want to waste his awake time with lots of travelling) -Likewise, somewhere that is not too much of an epic drive from home (Auckland) Bearing all this in mind, we are thinking about hiring a house or nice motel unit in Rotorua or somewhere like that. 	We really liked Taupo and Paihia because there were plenty of interesting places to see and visit plus some nice places to wander around with a buggy and nice cafes etc to break up the day. Activities Taupo - swimming in the lake or hot pools, start walking around the lake then back the same way, good walk to Huka Falls, or just drive there and look around, puzzle world has a good cafe with puzzles on the tables, honey hive was good for honey tasting and looking at bees, good park with big shady trees right in town, nearby cafes are good with a great view of the lake, crater moon takes an hour or so to walk around and has some good geothermal activity. There is also a prawn park and volcanic centre but we didn't get there. Paihia - nice walk around the wharf area, can walk out to Waitangi, visit Waitangi Treaty House, Haruru Falls (can walk there), take the buggy on the Ferry to Russell, walk up to viewpoint (really steep though), some nice cafe's to explore in Russell, and a restaurant on the Paihia wharf with big fish tanks that you just sit and watch. We also did a daytrip up to KeriKeri. Both places we got a ground floor one bedroom motel. Easy to walk out the door awith bubba in buggy and leave the car at the unit or can pack up and take the car. Could do some self catering if bubba too tired to handle going out for dinner, plus had a separate lounge so we didn't all have to go to bed together.

	We stayed in Paihia last August when Ds was 6mths old. We stayed at Abel Tasman hotel and was a great two bedroom self-contained unit a couple of meters from the beach. We just did some half day trips and it was a nice 5min walk to the shops so were able to get takeaways e.t.c for dinner.

	I would recommend Waiheke Island, but might be a bit too far for you? But you can rent a bach and you have all the comforts of home. Beaches and town are never far away and it's sooooo relaxing. We took DD a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. She slept really well too, from the sea air I think.

	I remember when my girls were younger it was so nice just to go somewhere different. We often just went into Wellington or Palmy with the girls and played tourist for a few days. It was lovely and not to far to travel with young ones (my girls were not good travellers). Last year we did a really nice trip down to Chch, stopping at lots of different places a long the way. With a young one it is probably better to stick with only one or two different locations. Make sure you can get a place that is self contained and having that extra bedroom would be really handy (I remember once having to go to bed at 4 when we put the baby down :s) With the baby still being quite young you probably don't need to find too many activities for the baby to do (just wait until they get older ;) ) Most places are fairly baby friendly. Some places I have always though would be nice to go on holiday and not too far would be Nelson or the Wairapa.
