I am think front loader for all its benefits but what are peoples opinions on good brands etc?
I am wanting both to be of a good energy standard.

We have a Whirlpool front loader and drier. I think they are pretty good on energy usage although I hardly use the drier. Not sure how they compare to others as it was the only front loader I could find at the time but love it. I felt like our clothes had never actually been clean once we switched from our old top loader which only used cold water

I know that front loaders are better in terms of energy efficiency, but with a new baby I wouldnt be without my top loader. (I lived with a front loader for 3 years in the UK!!!) At the moment I do so much washing for my wee fella, and I am always finding the odd sock that we have missed putting in, or a bib that was forgotten....so having a top loader means that I can just chuck it in. It also means that I can soak things if I need to...not sure if front loaders do this or not.
Just worth thinking about I guess....

Simsam thanks for that advice I will definitely think it over, especially the not being able to soak bit.
I really don't like how rough top loaders are on our clothes but if it is going to be eaier with bubs. Hmmm. Will need more thinking and research me thinks.

in my opinion I'd think long term - you're going to have the washing machine for 5-10 years, bubs is going to be making tons of washing for 6-12 months. I'd take the one that's better on power usage, and just chuck the socks in the washing basket! (I always find seb's stuff when the wash is nearly done anyway with our top loader)

we have an electrolux front loader...LOVE it! BUT, front loaders do take longer to wash - try 2hours 45 for a "normal" wash!!!!! we use the eco-wash at 56minutes. still very long (initially I thought 2:45 was he time)

You can soak things in our front loader (we have a Bosch), I just put mine on rinsehold if I want to do this.

I have a samsung and it has no agitator so isn't rough on the clothes.. Has the same features as Jess's one.

we have a bosch front loader and love it. so much gentler on clothes and if we do forget to put something it, we do that much washing it isn't an issue anyway. Don't think I would ever to back to a top loader and I have tried the non agitator ones too!

Jess -sounds like you have the same one as my Mum, I  her washing machine!
I have a Simpson 8kg top loader coz I have a house full of hooligans who make lots of washing, but even when it was just Maya and I, I had a top loader coz I find them easier. Mum used to have a front loader and it drove me nuts!
I like the no agitator thing the LG ones have tho, it's much gentler on your clothes, kind of like a medium between the front loader and traditional top loader with agitator.
My dryer is a Simpson too coz it was cheap.

I have a Simpson washer and dryer (a 6kg one I think - I only have 1 little ratbag and a Dh at the moment though!)
IMHO they're not rough on clothes at all. And it takes 45 minutes for a normal cycle with an eco-rinse etc. I like top loaders a lot better and this one is pretty energy-efficient (3 stars I think which isn't too bad seeing as it only cost me $750)

We had a front loader in England and I didn't really like it (but maybe that was because had always had top loaders?). It always took ages to do a cycle and I think maybe the water over there is harder than in NZ because my clothes were never as soft as they are here. So that probably doesn't help you at all!!
If I had one now I would make sure it was fitted in a cabinet or something at knee or waist height, so I wouldn't have to bend down to get into it. Haev just had my dryer bracketed on the wall and its made such a huge difference!!

I love my new Samsung front loader 7.5kg, i have suffered top loaders since living in new Zealland ,but now we own the house and can choose for myself what i want, I went back to what i prefer. Yep it takes longer but the clothes looka nd feel cleaner, I can soak if I need to by using a cycle hold button. The spin is more effecient that the top loaders we have been using and it uses less power and water and detergent. It may just be what i am used to, and i know toploaders have a shorter cycle but i always felt that that compromised the clean
It has this silver wash cycle which releases ions of silver into the wash to sterilise the wash not sure what that's for but I use it with really stinky nappies tho (we have just got rid of rota virus)
Makes wise we had Philips and Electrolux (I think LG is Philips over here) in UJK and they were good, the Samsung was a good deal when we bought it but not a common brand for them to make washing machines I think they are branching out
