my daughter (17months) has started pinching others and i am not sure how to deal with it. so far she has not been strong enough to hurt anyone. she has tried to pinch me, and one of her baby friends (same age). so far i have been ignoring the behaviour with the reasoning that if she doesnt hurt anyone there will not be any reaction either way so the behaviour will not be reinforced. once she realises she doesn't get a reaction she'll hopefully stop.

how would you deal with this situation?

Pinch her back so she knows what it feels like? I had a biter, and it worked (not pleasant to hurt her but worth it in the end)

And she's also almost old enough to start using a hug/kiss/word to say sorry, so maybe you could look at introducing that? It started working with my girl at about 19mo

I haven't dealt with pinching but my DD had a nasty habit of kicking me in the head/stomach every time I bent down to change her nappy or get her dressed when she was about that age. I just used to say no, that hurts Mummy in a calm voice then pick her straight up and put her in her cot and walk out of the room. Only for a minute but the point was to remove my attention from her and teach her that wasn't tolerated. When I went back in the room I would say feet are not for kicking and pick her up and try changing her again. Sometimes it took two or three removals for her to get the idea but after about a week she was only trying it on every so often instead of all the time. Maybe try something like that? No attention but a consequence for the pinching behaviour.

Our DS was a biter - it started when he started daycare almost like a preverbal thing however we didn't wanna tolerate so what daycare suggested we do and it worked was if he bit simply say no! firmly but calmly, walk away and lavish attention on the person he had bitten. I.e when he bit my DH I would say no, put him down and turned my attention to hubby saying oh poor daddy, how horrible that he got bitten. cuddles and kisses for daddy and he eventually learned he got no attention for it.
Good luck :)

My DS does this a bit and I just tell him firmly no, remove his hand and then give him no more attention for it, turn away and talk to someone else kind of thing. He learns pretty quickly when Mummy isn't interested in him anymore
