Hayden is 6.5mths old and for the last month he's been getting progressively more distracted with his morning BF. Since he was born we have always done the morning feed in bed, so we get him up/open curtains/change his bum and then take him in bed and have a lovely snuggly feed - well that was how it went up to about 5mths and progressively he is becoming more and more distracted. At first he'd kick and wiggle but still feed and now I can barely get 5mins feeding out of him. I really miss my snuggle time with him but more so am worried that now he's on 3 solid meals a day that he still needs a good milk intake as that is where is main nutriants are coming from.

He feeds at 7.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm and 6.30/7pm and then wakes at around 4 or 5am for a night feed also. He's having 3 solid meals a day and doing pretty well there I think.

Do you think I should just go with his cue's and not be worried if he's more interested in what's going on around him (he's really close to crawling so wants to flip over constantly) or do I need to change something (goodness knows what!) to get him to feed better. Sometimes his day feeds are pretty short too other days they are much longer. Part of me says if he's hungry/thirsty then he'll drink and if he's not then so be it, I cant force him!!!

I've tried feeding him in his room or on the couch in the mornings instead of in my bed but it only slightly improves the situation until he figures out there is also stuff to look at in that room also.

I try not to get stressed about it but I think I still have a few hang ups from our early days of BFing where we had to try really really hard to get it working.

Any thoughts or experiences of what your 6/7mth old did with BFing would be really useful, is this just a phase or do I need to adapt for him growing up?

Because he's having a feed at 4 or 5am, he may be not as hungry for the 7.30am feed... also cos he is having 3 solid meals a day too. By that age my breastfed boy wasn't having any night feeds.

It might be that he's wanting to push out that morning feed to later, or you could try settling him a different way at 4/5am. I don't know what you guys do, but we used to settle my boy with a dummy if he woke during the night.

KK - Natalie is doing the same thing too, and I'm also guessing it's because of her feed during the night, so she's just not that hungry. We're trying to phase out the night feed(s) but that's easier said than done!

ETA: the bummer about dropping the 4/5am feed is that then our day starts at 6am

Probably not the same thing as my girl is a bit younger, but she is like that at all of her other feeds (she is starving in the morning). So I wait until she is really hungry before feeding her and if she pulls off I will hide the nipple for a few seconds if she is trying to find it again, seems to work a bit. Also (thanks to a fellow OhBaby-er's advice) I now give her 5 seconds and if she would rather look around than drink I put the boob away. We still have fun in bed but it is more with talking and giggling rather than feeding so we haven't lost that special time.

Totally know what you mean. I ended up getting up and feeding him as soon as he woke up, while still in the semi-dopey sleep land, feeding him in the lounge. It was the only way he would drink enough without practicing his commando crawl at the same time . I really miss that cuddly time in the morning.

It makes sense that if he goes 4 hrs happily during the day between BF's that the 5am feed means he's actually just not that hungry at 7am- he does do a proper feed at that hour hmmmm maybe its time to be brave and try and settle him without a feed at that time     He slept thru this morning and was much more concentrated on his feeding at 7am so that is further evidence the 4/5 am feed is filling him up.

I cannot believe how quickly these little people grow up, minute by minute it seems they become less like helpless creatures and more like independent individuals, its astounding to think only 6/7mths ago he needed me for every single thing in his life and now every day he's becoming his own person, its and and all at the same time!!!!
