Topic: Toilet training - poos Posted: 02 November 2010 at 6:13pm |
TTing for wees is going pretty well but Dan won't poo on the potty or toilet. He has done it before but always by accident. I know this is really normal for kids and I don't want to push it. He's got good control so just holds on - usually till his nap time when we put a nappy on. Not great for sleep though. Today he had his first accident in his undies cos he hasn't pooed for 2 days (and he's normally a 2/dayer).
Any tips on how to proceed? I knew he wanted to poo so offered him a nappy but he got distracted playing and oops .... I'm happy to give him nappies to poo in at this point. Any other ideas? I don't want him getting clogged up and sore and then having that effect the rest of his TTing.

Not sure if this helps but we are in a similar situation.
We've had one poo on the potty and a couple in undies so I encouraged him to ask for a nappy when he needs to go poos. I kinda know when he is going to poo (same time etc) and he usually asks for a nappy now.
I figure he'll ask for the nappy off or poo in the potty in his own time.
Good luck

I came across this article by Dianne Levy (who I really like) which reinforced the just offer nappies approach, so we'll go with that. Part of the problem is that he *wants* to wear undies now and is reluctant to go into nappies

My boy usually goes in his nappy during his daytime sleep but I brought a Toy Story torch thing for $10 and it has 6 or so different prijector cover thingies. He gets a new cover every time he poos on the toilet and he is a whole lot more into now.

I know this is a bit old now but just wanted to ask if you solved the poo problem in the end Flissty? I am having the same problem with DD except she is happy to poo in her undies, she just won't or can't go on the toilet. Do you (or anyone else) have any useful advice? I am getting sick of washing poo undies

We also had the pooing in the undies thing. She would even sit on the potty and say "no poos" then go outside (where she could be by herself, and poo in her knickers 2 minutes later!).
Like peanut, we used bribery! For DD, it had to be a reward big enough for her to overcome that fear (or whatever it was) for pooing on the potty. So we used mini my little pony toys (about 3 for $10 so not too bad), and we explained that she would get a toy if she pooed on the potty/toilet (she was getting stickers for wees at the time ). It took about a week, but because she wanted the toys so much, it worked . We slowly reduced the bribe for each poo, and are down to stickers now (and only then if she asks for them). We do still occasionally get #1 accidents, but we've had no #2's in the undies for weeks now, even while she's been at daycare in pullups

Nope, no solution. He is consistent at doing it in his nappy, so that's a big start. We haven't had any accidents for a couple of months.
Last week he nearly had an accident and he really freaked. It made me realise he's not quite ready mentally for it. So I'm just going to sit back and leave it for now and go with his lead. I'm trying to focus on being accident free with wees (he gets too distracted to go to the loo!) and I'll get consistency with that before tackling poos. I think for him, some of it is cognitive and associating the feeling and the action. He often knows he needs to go but doesn't seem to know how to push it out.

I have been trying the bribery thing over the last week - I brought a present for her (just a pencil case to put her felt pens in) and wrapped it up and put it on the window sill in the toilet. I told her that she would get the present if she did poos in the toilet, but so far nothing. She appears to be confused and keeps telling me that Santa left her the present on the window sill. Maybe I should try putting something she really wants up there, I think the fact that it is wrapped up is confusing the issue...?
At least he is doing it in his nappy Flissty. The poo undies are horrible coz I have to pull them down to get them off her and there is potential for the poo to go everywhere

we also did the bribery thing our DD was wees trained for about 8 weeks before we managed to get a poo in the toilet, when we did the grocery shopping she chose a treat option for poos in the toilet. chocolate frogs so each time she did a poo she got a chocolate frog - what also helped is a nice high step - stool so they can rest their feet on them and feel completely comfortable. took a couple of weeks of the occasional accident and now 4 weeks later no accidents and no chocolate frogs.

We've run into this prob with all our girls. I think it best to lessen the pressure by leaving them in nappies and taking them to the toilet when they ask (e.g. for wees). The other thing I've done when I didn't want to go back that far is to put them in nappies for sleep times (and then they start pooing at naps).

Yeah, poo undies are Thankfully he never had many of them. My sister's wee girl went through a phase of that, then all of a sudden it clicked and she's now fully TTed.
I think it can take them quite a while to get the hang of physically pooing sitting down, and mentally connecting the "need to poo - go to toilet - push" process.
I just remind myself "there aren't many 18 years olds who still wear nappies to poo". Somehow, sometime, we'll get there!

We got there in the end. Quite a long transitional period. Started with nappies, then he began to take himself off into the garden I generally managed to intercept him and offer the choice of nappy, potty or toilet. Started off always taking nappy, then occasionally potty now everything is on the toilet. For us the whole toilet training was a long journey/process but led by DS. In the grand scheme of things it didn't take him very long (a few months from anppies to fully toilet) so would agree, just go with the flow.
Flissty - my mum always said to me that you don't see many men walking down the aisle being chased by their mums to have their nappy changed!

Not happening. No poo accidents thankfully - he always saves it for his nappy at sleep times. I'm not ready to push it cos he's still pretty young for a boy to TT, so will go at his pace for a while longer then will step up the incentives/bribery.
