Topic: Bum Genius Knock offs? Posted: 10 January 2008 at 10:58am |
I bought some of the bum genius knock offs off trademe and am having a couple of problems with them and just wanted to know how others that have bought them have found them.
I bought the one size ones.
Firstly the insert is tiny, even on the smallest setting it still isn't as long as the nappy, which I find odd and a bit useless. He has had one on for less than 2 hours this morning and it leaked. I'm not overly concerned about the insert as I have HC ones I can use in them but it just seems so stupid to advertise the insert with it when it is actually pretty useless.
The second thing is that they are gaping around the legs but i'm not sure if that is just cos Spencer has skinny legs. My actual bum genius one he wears on the middle setting but I have just compared the two and the knock off ones are quite a bit bigger. So he has one on now that is on the smallest setting but it is still gaping around the legs. The elastic seems good its just that I can't physically get it so that it fits around the waist, without cutting him in half, but is tight enough round the legs (i'm not sure if that makes sense).
Anyway would be interested to hear from anyone else that has the one size ones.

Hi cuppatea, I have a couple. I only use them during the day with my Joel-eze insert in them. They fit Bella well around the legs, but she has very chubby thighs ! I still use the insert, just not on its own...I use it in my fuzzis plus 2 microfibre inserts for her night time nap and it lasts 12 hours. I don't have a bumgenius so can't compare. I certainly wouldn't buy a whole heap of them, but thats more because I prefer our fuzzis as they are a better fit all round for Bella.

I don't have any original BumGenius nappies but I bought one of the kock-off's to try and I don't have any problems with it. I'd never use hemp on it's own as it is slow absorbing so I just fold up a microfibre cloth to put on top and it does really well. My son is 16mths and 11.5kg with quite chubby thighs and he fits it on the medium setting. It's a very trim-fitting option but don't think I'd consider it overnight as I upsize at night to accommodate extra stuffing (I prefer a large Fuzzi or HC nappy for nights).

Have had a bit more success with the second attempt, has been on for a couple of hours and no leaks as yet. I am using my HC inserts which are microfibre cos the ones that came with it don't seem like they will do much plus they have only been washed once and being half hemp they won't be up to much without a few more washes first. The leak we had this morning was because it had wicked onto his trousers cos of them gaping a bit.
Spencer is probably not even 7kg yet and his legs are pretty skinny so it might just be a case of waiting for him to grow a bit more.

I found that after a few washes that hemp insert it came with worked great with a little mf on top. I don't think it matters too much if the insert doesn't go all the way back as most wee probably collects at the front & middle anyway. The Cotton Babies one-size inserts are great - they're the most absorbant mf inserts on the market - and can also be bought from Green Beans for $36 for 6, which is a bargain (imo!).

Yeah i'm not that fussed about the inserts as I have my trusted HC ones to use, I just find it odd to sell an insert with the nappy that is so small. I definately couldn't use it, Spencer is quite a heavy wetter it would be pointless even trying it. I will keep them for boosters though.
Well we had a third attempt and used a HC insert and one of the ones i got with my mummies touch and that seemed to work as it bulked it out enough for the leg elastic to fit, cos he wasn't wetting through them it was wicking by his legs cos of the gaping.
Don't intend to use them at night at the moment as we normally use a mummies touch stuffed with two HC microfibres and a 4 layer hemp, although these are quite big I probably could stuff that much in them.
