Topic: Toilet Training - where to start Posted: 18 December 2011 at 7:34pm |
This may sound odd, but I don't know how to start toilet training my boy.
He's 29mths, his communication is excellent, i think it's time.
When he turned 2 he became intrested in the toilet, but his communication was lacking and really he was just interested in the toilet paper. Now times moved on, he's lying about pooing his nappy, which is a step backward, but enough's enough.
This Christmas hoilday I'm going to get that boy into undies!
That being said, I don't quiet know what to do.
I am thinking that when the xmas maddness is over, I'll just stick him in undies and drag him to the loo every 1/2 hr or so and give him jelly beans when it works out.
Comments / suggestions welcome.

google toilet training in 3 days and read that - then just use a mix of that and your own instinct.

I followed my childs leads. I started by getting her to sit on the toilet. She didnt go #1 for ages however. she would wear undies happily but when time came to go she wanted a nappy. Which i had no issues with. No accidents and her learning to control when to go etc. A month or so of this and she finally went on the toilet. All go since then and in 6 months we have had maybe 3 accidents

My 2 1/2 year old was fully day toilet trained in 4 weeks. Not sure how or why it happened so fast but had the potty in the lounge etc. I made him wear his "big boy" undies around home all the time. If he wet him self I would say that's o.k we will try next time. It came to the point where he would wee a little bit hold on then tell me he wanted the potty. I also combined the use of the potty with sitting on the toilet. Use heaps of praise and comments that they are a big kid now. I also used pull ups to get him out of naps when we were out but would put the pull ups over his undies so he would know when he needed to go. Also look for cues they need to go like crossing legs, holding on to the nap when they are going for a wee. At times you will have to say lets go to the toilet to see if you need to go. For your own sanity and time i bought the sunshine kids dry seat for the car seats as you will not need to strip your car seat/pram if they happen to wee/poo while in it, well worth the money. Tweedle have them on sale i think.

My girl is 20 months and fully day trained and most nights is dry too. I just left her nudey all the time and we were staying with a friend so she watched her girl go. Once she done a wee I made a big deal about it and she soon clicked. She also liked to wee on the grass so if she wouldnt go on the potty I would take her outside to wee on the grass. I now only use nappys at sleep times and they are 85% of the time dry.

Does he still day sleep??? And is he dry from those sleeps? If so this is what I did.
When he got up I put him on the potty, I think TV might have been on, and he'd wee within 5 or so mins. Then I'd take him to the potty every 2 hours after that, I usually found he'd go about 2 hrs 20 mins. Then once he got the handle on that he just started asking to go.
Also go get him to help you chose some undies. Kmart has good ones 7 for $9 with cool pictures. Cooper loved wearing these so opted for them over nappies.
Also if he's dry from his over night sleep or you know he has just gone wees on wake up (warm nappy) make yourself get up just before his wake up so when he wakes up you take him & put him on the potty, his half asleepness helps with going wee's.
Apparently boys can be quite hard to train so don't beat yourself up about it.

Well day 1 and we've had 3 accidents and 4 successes in the potty.
The 3 accidents were when we tried to get him to use the toilet, then once we put a potty in the lounge it started working. I have been giving him a treat on success. Now he can't spend enough time on the potty because he wants another lollipop - oh dear.
I'm a bit worried about sending him to daycare in undies as he's bare bottom at home.

That is an awesome first day isaacsmum.
We did the treat thing too, 1 lolly for wee 2 for poo for the first 2-3 weeks till the habit had formed and he was doing really well. Then we started having a bigger treat for a dry day, i just told him "you're doing so well you don't need a lolly everytime now, you're a big boy". He was fine with that.
Eventually he would forget to ask and so i just let it slide and he forgot about the treats. We did potty for the first few months as he was not keen on the toilet. It is still the result you want, toilet will come.
