Topic: Cot to toddler bed Posted: 01 January 2012 at 2:00pm |
Has anyone converted their cot to a toddler bed?
How old was your toddler when you took the sides off?
Did you have any problems with them falling out?

We changed DD's cot in to her toddler bed at about 18months I think. She loved it and has only fallen out twice but since its such a tiny drop it didn't bother her really infact the second time I went in to check her in the middle of the night and found her asleep on the floor snuggled up on her sheepskin that we put there JIC she fell out!

Did you sleep her in a sleepsack or sheets and blankets? I was thinking it would be easier in sheets as then she's not tangled up in her sleeping bag. Being summer now would be the time to switch as its warm.

I took the side off the cot, put pillows on the floor & used sheets and blankets. I do think Cooper was older? big enough anyway to climb in & out himself.

C is almost there with climbing in and out herself, she spent two nights in a single bunk bed while on holidays and was fine will see how she goes and take the side off at the end of the month.

I don't think I would like to have DS in his sleeping bag while in a bed. It would make it harder to climb in and out and more likely for accidents I reckon.

This is my thoughts too DD doesn't like her sleep sack any way and with the weather being warm now would be a good time to have sheets and blankets.
I'll take the side off on the weekend and see how she goes.

I have DS in a sleep sack in his bed, we moved him to a 3/4bed at about 15 months. I like it as he doesn't actually get out of bed with it on, he just sits up and calls for me when he wakes. Also, he has started to move around a bit in his sleep nowadays and I often get up in the night to check him and he is completely out of his blankets. Not so bad at 10pm, but can be a bit chilly at 3am.
I would just go for the bed now and see how it goes, you can always put the side back on if she isn't ready

I was worried about the sleeping bag too so have just taken him out of it while it's warm. Will be interesting to hear how it goes as DH wants to take the side off ours as we need to move DS into a Bed in the next few months.

I've taken the side off tonight had to put her into her sleepsack its such a big sleep cue for her that she wasn't interested in settling until I did. FX she doesn't fall out.

DD was cosleeping in our bed for about 10 months when we finally stopped and moved her into her own room with her cot converted to a toddler bed. She was about 19/20 months old. No issues with her falling out as I never protected her from anything... She knew how to get up and down from our bed (much higher) and she is very sure footed.
If you are worried maybe make a safe landing for her? We did stick a mattress (because we had 2 cots so 2 mattresses!) on the floor but she never fell out (that we knew of) and when we took it away we had no accidents either!

Tried it last night and was unsettled night probably didn't help I was in to her quickly incase she fell out - think the side will go back on tomorrow for a few more months yet. Till she's big enough to get in and out herself without any trouble.
ATM she's sleeping in our bed

Oh no doesn't sound like a good night. We are off on Friday for a week holiday and DS will be in a single bed so was hoping to hear it went really well.

She was ok in a single bed on holiday they're wider/bigger than a toddler bed and much easier for me to lie down next to her and give her a cuddle back to sleep she only woke once

I just took the side off Alex's bed a week ago. Apart from taking ages to get him to sleep now as he just hops out of bed and plays, no problems. I just shut him in his room and when he's ready to sleep he hops into bed himself. Has fallen out twice ,once never even woke up, dont have anything down to break his fall and no problems at all. He just has sheets and a blanket.Has just started to pull them over himself if he wants them

we have polished floors, if we had carpet I wouldn't be so concerned about her falling out
