Topic: Patterns? Posted: 12 December 2009 at 12:52pm |
Does anyone know where I could get a pattern or patterns for these flash cloth nappies? We've decided (well I have) to go for them for the next baby and I want to make my own. They're far too expensive to buy in the shops for me!
I'm a pro sewer so I figured hey why not? Also for those of you who do make your own, tips on what fabrics etc to use would be greatly appreciated!! TYIA <3
Oooh also, I'm gonna chuck Thomas in them for night time, I'm pretty over poo being EVERYWHERE when we get up in the morning, suggestions? lol.. he's 18mths now. Ta.

I know you can get fabrics etc from the greenbeans website (www.greenbeans.co.nz I think) , I think they also have patterns too (or links to them)

Yeah the Greenbeans FAQ are a good place to start. There are a fair few patterns on the TNN website here, also their forum has a whole section on DIY nappies.
I have to say pocket nappies are pretty easy to make (esp if you're already a sewer!) and a good place to start.
For night times we use fitted nappies (generally bamboo velour) with woollen covers but I know a lot of people use well stuffed pockets.

I make my own - have the Button Boo hip snap patterns from username 'Judy' off TNN. Also Dittos one size pattern which is great off username 'Ditto' off TNN. Both I find very trim (pocket nappies). If you register on TNN them PM them they can give you all info. Judy is based in the US so payment has to be done through Paypal.
I use both for night time nappies, stuffed with a cloth flat and a bamboo trifold.
BEWARE though - this becomes a very addictive hobby But the cost savings are fantastic! Good luck

I agree with Mamma2N hehe, it is very addictive! I downloaded a free pattern off TNN for Wee Weka sidesnaps pockets, then modified it to a bigger size, and made it so it wasn't sidesnap (I prefer them to do up at front) and a few extra bits and pieces.
For materials, I also get them all from Greenbeans, they are great
YAY for nappies! (yes I'm slightly obsessed... )

Thanks girls! I'll be waiting til after xmas now, but that greenbeans website is great for fabric! cant wait to order some :D printed out all the patterns on TNN today too :P I'm looking at going for the prefolds with covers. My only question is (and im probably blind for not seeing it somewhere else) can I use cotton on the outside with the PUL/ microfiber on the inside so they look cute?

You can, but beware that cotton does tend to wick moisture so once the insert is wet the cotton is likely to start bringing the wetness to the outside of the nappy. If you want a cute outer layer you're best with either wool (expensive) or something synthetic. Minky is all the rage at the moment, very cute and cuddly. It can be slightly trickier to sew a nappy with a hidden layer of PUL but no doubt you'll get the hang of it

You can get some cute as patterned stuff as well..not from greenbeans tho, from other internet sites. There are a few over here in aussie who do cute pul material and there was some cute stuff in nz but I am not sure anymore??
Also you need to think about the fasteners you want to use. If you want to use snaps then you might want to look at buying a snap machine...not sure if they still have a special on but greenbeans were doing a starter special where you got the snap machine and all the different colour snaps for some really good price. Note that you would want to use plastic snaps NOT metal ones since they are gonna spend a lot of time being wet....metal might rust!
Otherwise if you want to use velcro then ignore the above haha!
I have found that suede cloth is much easier to sew with but not half as much choice in colour - it is also better for hot climates since not as bulky. Of course if you are a pro sewer then the stretchiness of fleece probably ain't gonna bother you!
Hmm, the other thing that people seem to recommend is doing trifolds as they dry a heck of a lot quicker than ones that are shaped.
I wish I had not brought as much plain stuff as I did because then I could justify making more cute ones haha.....oh and yeah if you do buy cute pul then it is waaaaay more economical to buy a half metre of it since you can get more nappies to fit on a half metre rather than buying nappy cuts...but of course then you will have several nappies the same...hasn't worried me as my nappies are in three sizes so just make a variety of sizes and have some sizes doubled up....
hehe not that i am nappy obsessed right now ...ok yes i am!
Oh yeah, and I brought a new conceptions poo pocket nappy just coz i wanted to have different sizes. from bumbles.co.nz.

Yeah you used to be able to get some funky poly print PUL from Wigglebums and Little Buttons. Wigglebums has closed down although she's reopening for custom orders next year (doesn't help on the DIY front though). Little Buttons has been sold (to Bumbles actually) and is reopening soon. You can also find some in the DIY section of EcoMoon.
You just missed out on the special on snap presses, they were 30% off last week There are people you can contact to get your nappies snapped (there's a list on the Greenbeans website).

I make mine velcro too, and put polarfleece over the waterproof layer so they have cute patterns
Here's some info I found about polarfleece from www.cuddlesncloth.com.au: Polar fleece is what our covers are made from, itfs a 100% polyester fabric and they provide a highly water resistant barrier against nappy leaks Polar fleece is great for day or night as it is highly breathable and cool in summer, warm in winter. Its not 100% waterproof and you may get compression leaks where the nappy will soak through the polar fleece. To explain this the Polar fleece fabric is woven in a densly mass of entwined fibres a bit like a non absorbent sponge stoping the wetness from escaping but when the nappy is really wet underneath and baby is sitting in for example a car seat for a long time the polar fleece fibres are squashed and the wetness may escape/soak. I rarely have this happen because really if it soaks through the cover then generally the nappy under will be well and truly due for changing anyway, in saying this Polar fleece covers are great budget nappy covers and are great for rash prone skin due to the breathability .

Yeah Wigglebums had some super cute stuff...didn't know about little buttons...
A couple of the aussie online shops are
www.tinytoosh.com.au
www.theclothnappyshop.com.au
On the nappy website over here, it has lists of fabric places but half of them seem to be closed now. I wish wish wish that Greenbeans would do a greater variety of suede cloth and also that they did patterned pul!
