Topic: What to do with my time..... Posted: 23 August 2010 at 2:23pm |
I am at home all day by myself for until the baby is born and I am trying to think of something productive to do with my time, that doesnt cost much. I pretty much would like to do something to learn new skills, something that can help bring in a few extra $$, or some kind of volunteer work.

Learn how to knit? (if you don't already) You can make great baby cardies for about $10 (if you buy the wool on special) and handknitted items sell for around $40 in a shop just up the road from me.
Otherwise -- seriously, I would just really enjoy "me-time" -- you will look back soon enough and wish you appreciated the days you had the luxury of even going to the toilet by yourself!!

Or can you sew? You might be able to make things and sell them on TM
Or what about doing something like getting a vege garden started or preserving fruit, making jam etc. Won't make you money but could save you money.
Or what about getting yourself set up as a Tupperware/Avon/Nutrimetics/Something baby related rep. You could set up a client base over the next few months before baby is born.
Take a Community Ed course or learn something by correspondence

Yip vege garden is a great idea! Great way to save money and have the satisfaction of your own veges.
Could volunteer at a school as a parent helper..not sure what they do but maybe helping kids with reading etc.

are you creative/arty? maybe you could paint or use fabric to "scrapbook" letter blocks to sell on TM or at your local markets?
or could do some kids type paintings?
do you like cooking? could do home-made "meals on wheels" dinner type thing for a family who is too busy to cook home-made meals but desnt want the kids on takeout all the time? (hope that makes sense lol)
uhhh if you can sew or knit, you could make a selection of stuff, sell at your local markets or on TM and give $1 per item to plunket or a charity? prostate month is coming up... maybe you coulkd do blue "i <3 my daddy" tops or blue rattle blocks or anything blue, and donate a portion of the profits (suggesting these coz you mentioned volunteer work, not saying hand over your money lol!)

I'm curious why you've left work this early, it might help with suggestions! I would put some time aside to get involved with some sort of mums and preschoolers group so that you have a mums-with-babies friend base started before baby comes along.
Also, are you due in January? Come join us in the thread (I'm kinda new there so forgive me if you have already!)

I left work due to really bad nausea and pre natal depression. The nausea has faded finally to be manageable and my mood has lifted since I left working full time. I am a bit wary about going back to work incase I cant cope. So I really want to do something good with my time, for myself or others without there being pressure.

A bit of temping wouldn't hurt then (IMO) because it would be short-term placement and you can pull the plug if you don't feel like you are coping. I'd try for part-time though because it's easier to manage as you get bigger etc. But certainly make sure you have a good friend base in your area, of ppl with small kiddies, because it will be your best antidote against PND (and it's good fun too).

I guess it depends on if you want extra money or just something to fill in your time.
I agree with what the others have said about temping but would not pick anything stressful.
If it a hobby you are after try, sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, arts & crafts, do the baby's room, spring clean, sort out clothes etc..
Have you joined an antenatal class...good way to make friend. Our local church that ran a mainly music group also did a coffee group & we did arts & crafts, had morning tea & they looked after the kids, not everyone that went had kids so a good way to met others.
Make the most of you time now...when baby arrives you will be busy so if you want to lie on the couch then do it
