I'm little bit worried about how my 2year old daughter will react to the new arrival. She has been the centre of attention for so long I'm worried it will be a huge shock to her and feel left out. We have taken her to midwife appointments, scans and she has helped us set up the babys room, she has even knocked on my belly and said "come out baby" I know she understands she is getting a brother or sister but I am wondering if anyone has any advise for introducing her to the new baby and how to insure she doesn't feel left out???

i've been reading lots of books on the same thing, as my son will be just over one when the new baby comes. They suggest Dad bringing the older sibling to the hospital. the new baby should be in the cot and mum makes a fuss over OS. then they go to see the new baby all together. Also, Dad should take OS home, not let someone else and stay up there as that couold make OS feel abadoned...apperntly. I of course haven't tried any of this yet.

I've read that something you can do which is quite lovely, is buy a present for your older girl, and give it to her when she visits you and new baby for the first time. Tell her it's from the baby, cos the baby is so excited that she is their older sister

I've aso heard that buy a present for your child to give to the new baby - giving is special too!

We ask our son a lot what he wants to give to the baby - he has choosen a lot of thinsg from match box cars to his unwanted dinner - but we try to bring the baby into conversation now so that when it is born its not such a big deal?

i also remembered last night that when you talk about the baby say "our baby" or "your brother/sister".

heheheh I have no advice to give but just wanted to tell you about my friend who is pregnant and also has a 20 month old

She ahs been trying to introduce Rory to the concept of a new baby so during a midwife visit she was trying to get him to listen to the heart beat. He wasn't too fussed with the whole thing while the midwife was searching but as soon as she picked up the heartbeat Rory was so excited "Ooooo a train!"
Now when someone asks if his Mum has a baby in her belly he replies "No baby, Mama has a train"

Apparently his parents are going to give him a train when the baby arrives. hehehe

Our then 20month old was fantastic, I had some presents in Jaydes bassinette for her and she was stoked. They just adore each other. SHe also has a baby doll that has a high chair and a pram. So when im doing stuff with Jayde she is doing stuff with her baby. Even gives her boobie. Very cute. We nver had a problem with jelousy. Just maybe loves her sister too much ie over powering cuddles all the time.

yeah paris was pretty good for the most part, a few hits here and there and yep, just gets a bit over powering. she too has a dolly, and breastfeeds it and burps it then gives it "other side" lol. it's a great diversion when you are busy with baby for them to be able to copy you.

My friend has a 18 month old and a three month old and apperntly the little boy just loves his sister to bits, unfortunately, if they left them together that's exactly what would happen. he gets so excited and doesn't quite understand the concept of "gentle". I remember reading that you shouldn't leave kids alone for even a minute until one of them is at least over five. I also remember reading something about a three year old in Mississippi killing her brother. she sat on his head and he suffoctaed!! I'm a little nervous about Jake and B2!!!!!

Yep when i go for a shower i leave Jayde in her cot with some toys. Anything could happen if i left her out in the lounge with her sister.

usually paris is at daycare anyway, but i still wait till ayja is asleep then, or if they are both home, i take them both into the bathroom with me and put ayja in her bouncer and bring some toys in for paris to play with.

paris understands gentle... and she knows - but sometimes i think she likes to test things out...like "hhhm wonder what would happen if i stick my barbie on ayja's head?" or "i wonder what might happen if i lie on her tummy?"

oh yes, paris has tried the nail clippers, she's a bit sadistic really... hate having her toenails cut..but more than happy to get clippers for me to do Ayjas, same when they both had eye ointment.. screamed and kicked at me when i went to put hers in, but loved watching me do Ayja's. such a nice big sister. lol
