This is so confusing,
if i enter the first day of my last period i get my due date as the 14th April 2006, which matches the midwifes, but that would make me 12 weeks pregnant,
but when i had my dating scan done at the time it said i was 5wks 6 days which only puts me at 10weeks,
how do i know which one is correct.

Katrina, I was in the same position as you.. I had a due date from my last period of 11th August... but my first scans due date was the 20th.. Up untill 1 month before I was going by my due date (11th) but then the midwife said... if you end up going over the doctors etc wont look at you untill the scan date.
So id have to say.. go by the scan date.

proberly neither, both are just a guide. There are lots of things that can come in to it. It depends when you ovulated, and when conception happened. Scans are only accurate to so many days. If you don't want to be induced, the later date gives longer for it to happen naturally. Talk to your midwife and work out what date fits best for you. Remember that two weeks either side is class as full term

How long is your cycle normally? They use 40 weeks from your LMP if you have an average 28 day cycle. My cycle is 33 days so I'm less pregnant than my LMP indicates. It is all just a guide but scans are very accurate in the first 12 weeks so I would go by that. My son Alex should have been born on the 7th of October if I had gone by my LMP but my scan said 17th and after all that he was born on the 25th.

the scan date takes the size of the baby, cos up to about 7 weeks gestation most babies follow approximately the same growth patterns and size... after that the genetics take over and baby can be big small or otherwise. so by the scan they estimate how many weeks you are by how big baby is. also remember, that you probably didn't get pregger right around your period, they just add 7 days to your LMP date, then add 10 months to that date. go by the scan, it's probably right. And trish is right, really, it can be 2 weeks either way but they really only need to know so they know the absolute last date that they can leave you if you go overdue.

And first trimester scans are more accurate at dating than later ones, so if you have an early scan they go by that date rather than by your 20 week scan date.

i didn't have a scan until 16 weeks - although now i actually know when han was conceived i'm not quite sure it was 16 weeks, maybe she was bigger at that stage too - and that gave me a due date of the 20th of oct.
if i'd gone by my LMP the due date would have been around the 9th of oct.
baby arrived the 31st of oct.
so yeah, the scan date was more accurate but still strange. apparently i was overdue by 11 days (sure felt like it!!!) but based on when hannah was conceived i think she was born before 40 weeks. who knows?!?!?!?

Hey Nikki if you go by when you conceived then you only carry for I think 38 weeks (as a guide). For example I had my LMP on the 19th August but I didn't ovulate until the 7th of September so my due date is 38 weeks from ovulation.....according to my doctor anyway!

Jake was due on the 11th, but I was induced on the 25th...no idea about when he was conceived however. Also i was a little suspect of the japanese doctors. i thought they may have measuerd him small. jake was 7 pounds born and didn't have any signs of being a overdue baby, so i think he was a little early maybe......this time, as Lewis has a four month open ticket, i think we might leave it longer if B2 decides not to come on time....we'll see how i feel mid-january
