ok...so i was the kid who was sick at round the school runs and walked etc etc...(i loved team sports and swimming!)....but Ella has been invited to join some slightly older daycare friends at local athletics....
Im thinking it will be good for her....but never having been involved in athletics before - any thoughts? good / bad / ugly - for the kids and the parents???
and another question....shoes or barefeet???? apparently they can do both...so it is our choice....
i think althletics is a great thing for kids. there a so many school activities based around it....so i say why not introduce it to her earlier! just make it a fun thing for her, and ignore other 'competitive' parents (there are always some every sport you go!)
i also say go bare feet...i remember doing runs and sprints when i was little...and the shoes were always off!
Brooke did it from about 3 yo until about 7 yo and Caleb is now going. Its a pretty fun evening. The little ones are so cute. Caleb laughs so hard through his whole race he nearly falls over. He gets so excited when we say we have 'run fast club' tonight. It is only an hour on a week night and they usually have a few fun nights with lolly scrambles etc through the season. For the younger ones it is about participating rather than a serious competitive event but they do record places and have a prizegiving at the end of the season.
Brooke ran in barefeet which is better. Caleb insists on wearing shoes, running shoes are better than sandals as they keep on their feet.
It's also cheap, we pay $50 for the whole season (two terms) which is way cheaper than you would get swimming lessons or gymnastics classes for.
I took Brooke when she was 3 and she loved it and became quite the champ (not that it was about that ofcause)
We have started taking Rhyley now and hes just getting use to it (not so much the social butterfly his sister was) At ella's age they will most probably just do what Rhylz athletics do and thats ball handling skills with little mini course (ie: kick the ball round a stump - or carry a egg and spoon over a hurdle - not a real egg though) and 25 metre running race though its more bout the runnin than winning at their age.
I would recommend it and its truely a nice family thing to do - the older kids come and encourage Rhylz etc... and something mums and dads can get involved with.
Be prepared to hold hands and run along side for the first time though!
jake and taine are both enrolled and they LOVE it. Only problem is it has been canned for lots of weeks due to rain and jake is so tired after school we haven't been going. But it is cheap and great!
lol love the run fast club!!! not loving the parents running too part....!!!
it is mega cheap and with daylight savings she is staying up bit later so hope it wil wear her out actually! LOL! we get three trials first before have to join...but at $30 for oct to march that is NO problem!
I think she needs something other than daycare as weekends are family time and loads of water play etc on boat at beach etc etc....so we will give it a go! thanks for all your comments - they hve been very helpful!
