Ok, I need to get some more inserts in preparation for the girls starting on their cloth nappies once we have run out of the newborn Huggies.

We have a mix of prefolds, pocket and AIO nappies. For inserts, is it better to get microfleece, bamboo, hemp or a mix of all. The girls aren't very heavy wetters, although they sleep 8 hours at night so we would want to use something that would last. Also, how do you figure out how many to use??

Trial and error.
Sorry there is no magic one answer, what works for one baby doesn't necessarily work for yours. Also it will change over time, what works at 3 months may not work at six months or a year. You will probably need to increase or decrease absorbancy as time goes on.

Start with days first, maybe keep a few of your huggies aside for the nights while you figure it out.

Start out with heaps of absorbancy, very fat little bottoms, then use less absorbancy if it is working. It depends how often you are changing them too.

Personally I would start with a microfibre insert, then if that is not enough add in bamboo or hemp in behind as a good absorber. Microfibre is very quick to dry after washing.

Whatever you find is working have around 1.5 x the number of inserts as pockets, as the pockets dry faster.

HTH and sorry for the lecture

If you are in the stocking up phase I'd get a mix of all. Microfibre in each nappy, and then if you get night leaks or are heading out for an extended length of time with the girls, you can 'back it up' a bit, with one of the others. I prefer the bamboo to hemp, I find bamboo much softer

Thanks Flake I am in the stocking up phase. I have already bought 5 hemp inserts, but will keep an eye out for bamboo. The girls have bamboo cotton blankets on their bed, so I know how soft it is!!!

I just need to stock up on these, and some overnaps, and I'll be right!

My girl's a heavy wetter, so for the day (2 hours wear) I always use 2 inserts - normally one microfibre and one small shaped 2-layer hemp insert (just an insert, not a trifold). Trifolds are best to add to night nappies.

Go to one of the nappy material suppliers and buy the bamboo and make yourself, it will be soooo much cheaper than buying in the shops. That way you can have way more :-)

I have been using Ecobubs Wool pockets for at night. I dont stuff the pocket though, I just lay in a trifold. The wool is really good, even if she does a really good long sleep and is really wet, the wool keeps her dry and not clammy.
