Is TM my best bet?
I think it is a good idea to buy a few second hand nappies, of different varieties to see what you like, and what works best for your baby. Second hand nappies are good, but you may want to buy new ones if you want them to last a few kids.
How many do you need ? My baby is in cloth only, and we have 20 nappies. When he was newborn I washed everyday, now he is a year, I only was evey second day (I could probaby get away with every 3 days but would get a bit smelly).
what size do I need ? Either one size fits all, but they can be bulky on a young baby, or if you are going to get different sizes, mabye just get two sizes. You would probably need about 20 or the small ones, but could get away with less of the next size up.
how many inserts do I need ? I don't use nappies with inserts so can't help you here sorry.
There is a good website that sells nappies - bumbles.co.nz and they have lots of info on their site about how many you will need and the pro's and con's of the different nappies. You should also look at the nappy systems post in this forum.

Is TM my best bet?
TM is a great place to start as you can try different brands/styles of cloth nappies cheaper than buying them new.
How many do you need ?
I didn't start using cloth nappies until my son was 5mths old - I had 12 pocket nappies and did a wash every day (using approx. 6 nappies per day). I have around 25 newborn nappies for our new baby (due in 2wks) as newborns go through so many more nappies and I don't want to have to wash more than once a day. There's no reason why you can't start out using cloth part time though til you figure out which nappies you like best,
what size do I need ?
It depends on whether you want to use cloth from birth or not. If you don't mind nappies being bulky at first, or plan to use disposables for the first few weeks, you might find you like a one-size nappy. But if you want a trimmer fit on a smaller baby you might prefer sized nappies (my choice). I suggest you try a few different once to see what you like.
how many inserts do I need ?
If you want to go for a pocket nappy (with removable inserts) then you'll need at least one insert per nappy. It's always handy to have extras though as the outers dry quicker than the inserts so you can have spares inserts for a quicker wiash turnaround. If you need to boost your nappy with more than one insert you can boost with allsorts, including microfibre cleaning cloths or cut up towels!
I hope that helps answer some of your questions!

Is TM my best bet? Sometimes, also The Nappy Network may help, and people on here also like to get rid of their nappies here too.
How many do you need ? Are you starting from birth??? I would think you would need at least 12 smalls if you are. If not I started with 6 and then went up to 12 mediums (Josh was 5 months when I started), and then heaps more and I have about 28 mediums now.
what size do I need ? If you are doing single sized ones then you will need small, medium and large.
how many inserts do I need ? I have one boy who pee'd alot so he needed 2x microfibre trifolds in every nappy.

Is TM my best bet? I would actually say it would be cheaper to get a hire pack of a different range of nappies than be stuck with ones you won't use and trying to sell them on 3rd hand. There are a lot of people on TNN that have put together their own hire packs if your local council doesn't do them already (i.e. Waitakere City Council). Or failing that pick a few nappies that you like and get trial nappies. We offer a 30 day money back guarentee on ours, not sure what other companies offer.
How many do you need ?
That would depend on what nappy system you decide on. Pockets and All In Ones, you're looking at approx 12-15 for a newborn depending on you budget and how often you want to wash etc.
what size do I need ?
Again depends on what system you choose. Our smalls start at 2kg if you wanted to start from newborn, or you could wait a month or so and go straight into Mediums (start at 5kg). This size is the most cost effective of most brands as the child is in them the longest.
how many inserts do I need ?
For our pockets I advise people to get 12 nappies WITH inserts, then another 6 inserts for night use/extras and get a few boosters too.
