.....anyone who has had Gestational Diabetes had it then turn into type 2 diabetes? I got GD when pregnant with DD who is now 16 months old, when I had my GTT 12 weeks after DD was born I was told I had pre-diabetes and I have now had another normal fasting test with a bad result so I am going for another GTT tomorrow. I have been told it is sounding like I will have type 2 and if not then its not far away.

I am 31 and have a BMI of 22.5 I am a size 10 and I eat well, and excercise and no one in my immediate family has diabetes or anyone else in my family. I just don't get it, and I am thinking that I must be one of the 1 - 5% (or whatever low number it is) that ends up with diabetes from GD. I am hoping to fall pregnant again sometime this year but don't know what it will mean if I have diabetes and how that will affect TTC and pregnancy. Does anyone know anything about this? Should I be aiming to lose more weight? But then will I end up underweight.......AHHHHHH I am so annoyed that this is happening to me when I have always looked after myself health wise and never been overweight!

Type 2 Diabetes can be related to insulin resistance of cells, as well as being overweight (which obviously you aren't! ). I think management can include control of diet so that you take care your blood glucose level is fairly steady and doesn't get too high, and also there are some medications that can increase the sensitivity of your body to insulin, but I'm not sure how readily they are used? I'm sure should your test show anything that your GP will be able to guide you through a plan of attack.

Best of luck for your test tomorrow.

Ive had GD both pregnancies and it hasnt turned into anything so far but then I am overweight (for now) and have a family history so there a reasonable chance I will get it. Dont beat yourself up about it tho, sounds like you have done all you can and its just one of those things. I wouldnt try to lose anymore weight though, its not always a weight related thing.
good luck with your tests!

Good luck with your tests today I also don't think you need to lose weight. Unfortunately I think it's just one of those things. My BIL is the same as you (except from having a baby ), he's superfit, healthy eater and he has type 2 as well. He's had it ever since I've known him, and it's not stopped him from doing anything.

Hugs chicky

Hi there,
I had GD with my 3rd DS and I was fine afterwards, then late last year I was feeling off and asked for blood test... now I have type 2 diabetes!
My mum has it and my grandma (dads side) has it, I am also overweight which doesn't help. From what I understand it is not necessarily weight related either - sometimes it is about what you eat and other times just plain bad luck! (I have a friend who has it and if she is not at all over weight!)

As for TTC - I am TTC at the moment, once you have your sugar levels all under control it is more safe, there are more risks than a normal pregnancy but the main problem is if you have high sugars it can effect the developing baby. (which is why they have to be closely monitor you)
You can got to "pre conception clinics" I beleive as well where they can give you help and will give you the "green light" for conceiving.

I hope it all goes well for you, my Dr has been so great with the whole thing and with a little more knowledge and help from the nurse I have my levels under control. Good Luck!
