Topic: Ptyelism Posted: 23 November 2007 at 9:12pm |
Teehee, does anyone else even know what this is? Then again, I hope not, coz I hope no one else has experienced it!
Ptyelism is excessive saliva production associated with nausea, it's one of the exciting by-products of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (severe morning sickness characterised by frequent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down etc.)
So far I have had HG in both of my last pregnancies (and trust me, when people say they have 'morning sickness' it's a drop in the bucket compared to all-day every day spewing, with the gremlins I spewed every day from 5 weeks until they were born at 37 weeks.
Anyway, I digress, back to Ptyelism....
I have it really bad again this time. I have so much saliva that I am constantly having to spit into a tissue, and going thru a box of tissues a day (just to give you a rough idea of how much excess saliva I actually have!). I can't swallow it coz if I do it makes the vomiting worse, but the spitting into tissues makes me really antisocial coz it's disgusting and I feel like everyone is staring at me, and aside from that, in my pregnancy with the gremlins it stripped all the enamel off my teeth, so I shudder to think what state they'll be in after another 9 months of it, and it also gave me chronic heartburn coz the saliva is quite acidic.
Can anyone else relate? I never said anything about it when I was preg with the gremlins coz I was embarassed about it, but this time I've decided damn it, it's not my fault, there's nothing I can do about it, and besides, my OB last time assured me that it's not that uncommon. It's just incredibly depressing to sit here and know that it's gonna continue for the next 7 1/2 months...

Sorry no never had that problem, but if it makes you feel any better most of my job is getting people to cough up their phlegm - and show me so I know colour, consistency, amount etc So you can come see me, it won't bother me in the slightest! Hope you are doing ok with it all tho, sounds awful for you.

I never had it (thank god) but when I was a few weeks pg and having m/s I read a story in the press (i think) about women that have it and one womans story how she was sick the whole nine months and in and out of hospital for fluid replacement, she also talked about the saliva thing. Not nice and sure as hell put my m/s into perspective.
Forgot to add the cyber I think you are brave going through it again.

Nope never had it, in fact my ms was just nausea and tiredness. I watched Dr Phil (or maybe Oprah?) when they did a story on it (HG) and vowed I would never complain about my poor excuse for ms again!
It sounds horrible Emma, you poor thing!

I had it really bad in the first 10 weeks. After that, when the morning sickness passed too, it went away. Hope it does the same for you!

I have had this bad, but probably not as much as you. I'm not so bad I need to have tissues with me all the time but I'm forever running into the bathroom and spitting into the toilet or basin.
I can sympathise with you, mines only just starting to go away now. Only now I have a disgusting taste in my mouth ALL the time that just won't go away, not matter how many mints I eat or how many times I clean my teeth nothing seems to help
Any ideas
