Topic: Glucose test Posted: 08 December 2007 at 8:53pm |
I have to go for this some time this week and can't remember whats involved.
Do you have to fast the night before or is that only for the second one if you fail the first?
And this first one is only a blood test right?
God my memory is beyond shocking, all I can remeber from last time is the drink but I'm thinking that was the second test?
Thanks ladies

Don't have to fast for the first test. You go along, have the drink (hint: don't quench your thirst before you go to the lab and then it doesn't taste so bad). Gotta have the drink in 15 mins or less then the blood test is an hour later and has to be quite exact on the time or you'll have to drink that stuff again LOL! Then yep, a blood test. Not too involved but does require a bit of planning with a 1yo.

I actually really liked the drink I just had to do my 'first' test for the second time (at 34 weeks) for some reason and Busymum had whats involved exactly. Some places don't mind if you leave for the hour as long as you don't "eat, drink or smoke" (that was her quote to me ) and as long as you definitely make sure you're back on time to get your blood taken exactly on the hour. I went away for 1/2 an hour just to kill a bit of time but that way, I knew I'd definitely be back on time.

We arent allowed to leave for the hour here anymore as you are meant to do nothing and just relax for the waiting time. And yeah what busymum said. Its the second one where you have to fast, have bloods, wait 2 hours then more bloods. Its actually a nice little break I thought where I could sit and read uninterrupted!!

i had to fast for all of mine from 8pm the night before. Then you get drink, then after an hour they take bloods and send you back out, then another lot after an hour....then if youre like me by then you are starving and you go off to burger king!

same with me..first test was drink the drink in under 5 mins...(i was timed)then an hour then bloods.
i failed (8.5) so had to do second one..fasted 12 hours (included no water) then got there and had the drink adn first lot of bloods.. (then you can do anything except 'eat, drink or smoke' but you can go to the loo and drink some water if you want? right that makes sense!
waited an hour....more bloods...waited an hour more bloods..then off to eat :)

Funny how every lab seems to do it a bit different. Surely there wold be a standard procedure... Anyone on here a phlebotomist who can enlighten me?
