    Posted: 11 February 2008 at 11:37am
I was just wondering, how can you tell if you are leaking amniotioc fluid or just wee's?
Im pretty sure its just wee's as I am always needing to pee and if I dont go as soon as I need to some will leak out. But I was reading that around this time in pregnancy and through to the end I have to be careful Im not leaking amniotic Fluid etc.
Im not worried as such, I just want to be careful thats all.
TIA

yeah i got told...mousey... some people said like semen..but i don't think that sounds right:) my friend who had leaking fluid was filling a pad every hour or so.. so she knew it was more than wee...there is a test they do at hospital too ...i thought i might have been leaking so at 32 weeks had the test and it was fine...i'd just mention it to mw and she can talk to you about it..

It smells like semen. If you think it is put a pad on and your MW can test it.

Yes it smells like semen, I had that test done after my waters had broke and it came back negative. Only when I very sternly told the OB that I had not wet myself did she do a scan, and what do you know, no waters!!!! bloody docs.

At the stage Sheza is at the test would be pretty damn accurate. Later in pregnancy its not all that accurate.

Auck Hospital don't do the amniosticks any more, they are comparatively expensive and notoriously inaccurate.

I wouldn't worry too much Sheza, excess discharge is common, I needed to wear a pad from fairly early on with the gremlins to stop it soaking my knickers (sorry, TMI!) and some of that was prob bladder leakage too. Amnio fluid leakage is more of a worry early in third tri, it's relatively uncommon prior to that.

If you put a pad in and lie down for 30-60 mins, then when you get up if it is waters it will gush, cause it will pool for all that time. If it is not waters it will just trickle as usual.

Ah yes, but if you have a bladder weakness the motion of getting up can make that gush a little too. Waaaay TMI but I know from experience

Maya was like that and this one feels quite low, on my 12 and 14 week scans bub was sitting right down on my cervix so it must like hanging out down there. Not so pleasant for me!
Sheza - if your bladder gets really bad, ask your m/w for a referral to a womens health physio at the hospital, I saw one after Maya and while I was preg with the gremlins and they are great, they have some great exercises etc. to help with your bladder/pelvic floor muscles.
