 Topic: List of ’things to do’ after Bubs is born

I need to make a list of things to do after the baby's born. There seems to be so many of them (and they aften have to be done before he's so many weeks old) that I know I'll forget something! Here's what I've got so far...
- Get an IRD number for him
- Register him on our insurance policy (got to be done before six weeks)
- Register him with our GP
I know there's more... can anyone add to the list? TIA

i'm not sure if you are staying at home with him or not but maybe look into putting name on the waiting list for daycare, as some can have huge wait times.

Hopes you can get the forms for IRD number any time. I've got my WFF info pack already.
My understanding is your MW will be responsible for you and baby afterwards until you are transferred to a primary health care provider.
Birth Certificate you've now got several weeks before it has to be completed, however you do need it for getting IRD number.

Hmm, birth certificate... that might be handy
I've got him on a day-care list already, but will need to let them know the details, you know, name, DOB, insignificant stuff like that

Same as amme, any activities you might want to join like for example in wellington they have a playcentre program called space, babies join between 3 weeks-3 months and it's good to ring early as you can be stuck on a waiting list!

My MW sent a letter to the GP and plunket to register DD. We got given birth certificate forms at hospital so that was easy to do too. Everything else can wait till you get round to it, cos the Kelly's list is bang on!

Yeah Hopes I don't recall needing to register bubs with GP. I think all my MW care stuff was also copied to my GP - she was certainly listed on my hospital notes etc. MW def did the plunkett referral and I'm pretty sure the GP one too.
Birth Cert application was in the hospital "Well Child" pack they give you. Which also has heaps of other info. You can't get the IRD no until you've got the birth certificate from memory and bank accounts, pre-schools etc all need the birth cert first too.
SO I'd register the birth - then not worry about too much else. Go TheKelly I totally agree with your husbands list. Need to rest to get BF up and going as well as possible.

I just registered DS when we went in for his first lot of jabs, takes all of 2 minutes to fill out the form.
An IRD number is also needed if you want a bank account.
I dont think there is anything you really *need* to do straight away. And dont go crazy doing things in those first 2 weeks when all bubs does is sleep. That is one thing I really regret!

Thanks. It was my midwife who told me to remember to register him with a Dr, so perhaps she's not as obliging as some of yours were?
Anyway, good to have the 'rest' message reinforced, because I can so see myself not doing that. I will show this thread to DH and he can remind me

Re: health insurance, for some comapnies, you need to register them in the first 3 months, otherwise you run the risk of having them excluded should they be born with any health issues.

Also, once you have an IRD number you can join baby up with Kiwisaver and start earning from the $1000 government kickstart
And if you think you might need to travel (eg. family overseas, etc) then getting on to a passport could also be a good idea.

Recharge the camera batteries when you get home from hospital cos all you'll want to do is watch him/her and take lots of photos all day

We signed bubs up with the GP before he was born. Midwives are great, but they can't treat everything.
Other than that, we found that things just happened anyway and it wasn't too much of a hassle to get things done.
