 Topic: Steroids in pregnancy

Hi. Ive been told I need to have steroids and have been booked in to have them given to me at 26 weeks. Im debating if to agree to them as Im not guaranteed to deliver early and dont want to have something that I may not need.
Has anyone else had steroids, either cos they went into labour early or were highrisk for premature birth, and why did they agree to the steroids? And how did it affect you.

A good friend of mine (sorry it's kinda hear-say response to your post) had steroids to treat asthma...all is ok with bubs - so, not unheard of.
(I'm sure there'll be some more specific responses to your post as that's not quite what you are asking! sorry!!)

I had to have them at 31wks when they thought DS was going to come early. He didn't though and ended up being 2wks late. Didn't have any side effects or what not from them.

I had them 3 days before having DD. I haven't done any research into whether there are any side affects if you don't deliver early but for me, if there is a risk of preterm labour then it is definately worth the chance and I would be having the steriods. In fact I am going to ask if I can have them when I reach 24wks as I have placenta previa and if I go into labour then there won't be the option of trying to stop it, they'll just need to get the baby out asap.

I had steroids at 31w when my waters broke, Callum was born a week later at 32w. As far as I'm concerned the steroids really helped him, he breathed on his own from the get-go and was only in the NICU for 10 days before we came home.
The only research I did at the time was into the timing of them, not that I would have changed anything I don't think anyway (more to do with whether at 31-32 weeks they were actually needed).
The only effect they had on ME was that they hurt like a mofo when they inject them into your butt!! Not as much as labour though

OT but, Callum was discharged at 33/34 weeks?  Wow! Did they send you home with a NG tube?

I had the steroid injections after a small bleed at around 31 weeks and they thought I was having a few contractions (I think they were wrong about the contractions - I just had a bad cough at the time!). Didn't have time to research them  as I was only given a small time to decide. Jude didn't end up coming til after 39weeks. No side effects as far as I know.

Hi I had one dose of steroids at 33 weeks gestation with my second son, he was born 2 weeks later at 35 wks.
I also had 3 courses of steroids with my 4th son at 23 weeks gestation, he was born a week later at 24wks. The only side effects I had was a massive headache the day after each course was given. Hope it helps.

I think the benefits definitely outway the negatives. Due to timing, I was only giving one lot of steriods the day before my DS was born at 26wks. He was on the ventilator for 9 weeks, CPAP for many weeks and then came home on oxygen (he was a year old (corrected) by the time he came off the oxygen) - If he had been able to have steriods earlier and more it of, then I believe my DS's situation would have been a lot better. Because he developed chronic lung disease, he's now got asthma.
If I were to have another high risk pregnancy, I'd certainly be asking for steriods sooner.

What NikkiB said, if there are any negative connotations to steroids, the benefits to baby far outweigh them. I started having regular contractions at 29 weeks and it took 24 hours of muscle relaxant drugs to put a complete stop to it, during which I had a steroid shot (and as someone else said, hurts like a b!tch when they push it in, and feels like you should have a bruise right there for a while after!) then another one 24 hours later. Escaped a 3rd cos contractions didnt return...
Ironically she never showed ANY signs of wanting to make an entrance from then right up until she was born via elective the day before EDD!

I had a false labour at 32 weeks, but while they were trying to work out if I was in actual labour or not, it was mentioned that if I was (had contractions very regular just wasn't dilated) they would be given to help baby get the best start.

Steroids in pregnancy
He's always liked his food lol. He's a champ! You'd never know he was so early now - he's 12.5kg and 86cm tall at 19m. We were very very very lucky.
