Topic: To OBGYN or not Posted: 13 June 2010 at 6:42pm |
Hi,
We're having our first twins (yay!). Were at 11 weeks at the moment and are looking for a LMC. What do other expecting parents with twins go for? Do you go for obstetricians or a midwife?
Any recommendations for OBs or midwives?
Thanks heaps!

Hey
I had a midwife, and then I was refered to a OB as well as being a twin pregnancy it was classed as high risk, altho I didn't really have much to do with my OB just a few visits and then he was there at the birth but more as an observer then delivering

I cant really help with the twins thing but as you say your 11 weeks you need to decide fairly quickly as youll need to get you NT (nuchal translucency) scan wiithin the next week or so as they have to do that and the blood screen before 13weeks i think.
You need a referral for these from your LMC
good luck with finding someone!

Its ok Nic, her GP can be her LMC until she finds one and they can do the referrals And you dont HAVE to have it...
I personally would go with a mw as you will get referred to an OB anyway....

I started with a MW and she was excellent as she had previously worked as a hospital MW so was very familar with twin pregnancies and the hospital system.
I had shared care with her and the hospital.
I was referred to the hospital OB team from 20 weeks and @ 28 weeks I was moved to the high-risk OB team as Aoife was 'small for dates'.
If I was pregnant with twins again I would go privately with an OB as while the hospital care was brilliant I would prefer the one on one relationship with the same OB during my pregnancy.
Where are you based? You might find that some LMC won't take on a twin pregnancy.

I agree, and sometimes it can take a while to find the right person who you 'click' with, I didn't get a mw until about 10/11 weeks (found out late anyway) but make sure the mw is someone who understands you and gives you a lot of choices, listens to you, etc.
And from what I remember you can have the NT scan up to 13 weeks or something, anything past that isn't as accurate?
You don't have to have scans or bloods done. I never got offered bloods but had the scans.

That's great! Also be sure to join your local Multiple Birth club as they will provide some support for you and your family too.
