We are planning a 7 night camping trip with my sister and her family. Our baby will be 13 months old and my sister's baby will be 9 months old.

Having never camped with babies before, we'd love people's feedback on how easy or difficult it is and what to consider.

We have the option of booking a motel unit in the campsite adjacent to where we will be tenting, and sleeping in their with the babies (and using for day naps); but it is a lot of extra money and means we'll be away from our families part of the day and night.

Concerns - baby waking up others at night, sleeping in tent in the heat of the day, how to confine crawling toddlers in a campsite, how to entertain babies if it rains.

Any comments and feedback to help us decide whether to just use the tent site or grab a motel unit as well would be greatly appreciated.

I camped last Xmas, well we slept in a tent and what we did is took our portacot with a mossie net & he was fine. He was 23 months old but the only thing I found was with the heat for the day time sleeps, this was up in the HB.

I've done lots of camping with my children. Yes it can be hard getting them to sleep in the heat of the day. i find it best to find a nice shady tree and put their portacot under that for nap times. If your baby wouldn't sleep in that situation then tent with all its windows open and doors open does work too. They just sleep nudey and don't expect really long sleeps.
Night time waking happen and I have never had anyone complain about them. I think people like seeing young families camping and don't mind the extra noise that comes with it.
As for confining the kids. We just kept and eye on them and generally there is so much new stuff that they don't go far. It is more work on the watching front but as the are generally more adults around it's not bad.
I'd feel like I was missing out if I booked a motel while everyone else was camping.

We first took DD camping when she was 6 months & have gone at least twice a year since (she is 2.5 now)
Day sleeps with the heat have never gone very smoothly but we usually just open the whole tent up and eventually she sleeps (if not a long walk in the buggy does it)
Night waking does happen but she has always settled very quickly I think because we are so much closer to her than at home.

Go for it! heaps of fun, we have been camping with DD since she was 6mo, she loves the tent & being able to run around wherever :-) We take a bucket to bath her in, and she sleeps in a portacot. At camp grounds, there are usually lots of kids to run around with when they are older, so that means you can relax a bit too :-)

I am off for a week single handed with ds this Sunday. I reckon it will be a piece of cake. Give it a go!

We did a couple of trips, one when DS was 8 months old and the next time he was about 18 months old. At 8 months it was a piece of cake. We had a big canvas tent with a portacot for him and airbed for us. When we opened it all up it was really breezy and cool for sleeps. We used disposable nappies, jars of baby food supplemented with bread and bananas and he was still BF. He wasn't crawling which was a real plus but happy to sit on a picnic blanket surrounded by toys on the beach under a big gazebo. He had the odd sleep in the buggy which folded right down to lying position.

The next year was a bit harder keeping him away from cooking stuff but there were plenty of other kids around that were happy to be tasked with entertaining the toddler while we prepared meals. He slept in the portacot in the same tent as us overnight but only in his buggy on the beach during the day. As he was walking he needed a lot more supervision but there was a group of us so that was ok.

When we take our kids camping, we keep a torch, a bottle, and a flask of warm milk close by at night to help them settle again shoud they wake up :) I tend to find our kids sleep far better when camping, with all the running around and fresh air :)

I have never tried camping with my kids. I think it's quite difficult although someday maybe I'll do it

Hello. Since you decided to go camping with your family then I would recommend you to buy cold weather tents with stoves, especially because you have little children with you. It would be the number one advice for you if you care about the health of your baby and sister's baby. So I wish you good luck and better weather. Hope you would like this experience.
