Topic: Hospital stay for subsequent birth Posted: 18 May 2010 at 8:11am |
I am wondering what to pack in my bag as I don't really plan on staying that long.
With my 2nd I ended up staying 2 nights (she was born at 7pm) mainly because she wouldn't feed but this baby I am not sure.
I am planning on birthing in a maternity home which is acutally just up the road (2-3 mins drive)
How long did you stay with subsequent births?

I know a lot of people go home the same day but I plan on staying my allowed time.
I see it as a good time to get alone time with my new baby without DH and J around and to rest a little (ie mw can take baby if I really need a nap even though I know they dont like too) and tbh even though I am still bf.. bf a toddler is a lot different to bf a newborn and it would be nice to have someone on hand if I forget how to latch a nb LOL

I'm with you Melnel. I plan on staying my 3 nights to spend some uninterrupted time with the new baby. Although DH is fantastic round the house I don't want to be 'back on duty' for a couple of days IYKWIM.
Also to get BF sorted as I struggled last time... although we made it to 18 months in the end, I could do without destroyed nipples this time. It will be so different BF a newborn again, you don't even have to think about latching with an older child

With Ollie I had 1/2 a night in hospital and 2 nights in the birth centre.
With Lilia I only stayed 1 night in the birth centre. It was nice to spend some uninterrupted time with her, however the next day I was totally ready to go home.
This time around if it all goes well I intend to stay 1 night again. I think it will be nice to spend some 1-on-1 time with bub before heading home to 'reality'

With Daniel I was there 3 days because of feeding issues. They wanted to kick me out earlier but I refused lol..
With Jared I was out of the hospital after 4hrs.
This one max 1 night. Those beds are so uncomfy, its not a quiet place so rest is something I can get better at home and just have a babysitter for Daniel.

I was glad to get out of the place after my 1st, was in for only 2 days after my c/s cuz i begged my midwife to let me go home lol. I wanted to go home straight away after my 2nd but she was born at 8.30pm and they wanted to keep an eye on me since i had had an epidural. I was out the next day. I think the max is 3 days unless they arent too busy and there is room for you to stay. I really hate hospitals, and i birthed my last 2 babys at home.

With Ella I was in the hospital for 3 nights
With Tom I stayed at a birth centre for 4 nights and was so glad that I stayed a bit longer. Gave me time to bond with Tom without worrying about Ella and to get through the first few restless nights. Ella was fine with me being away from home for so long- she visited me every day and we talked on the phone just before bed.

i came out the same day with Mack and plan on doing so this time too. i hate strangers looking after me though and have a really perceptive and helpful DH so there is no need for me to stay.
if the place you will be at is just up the road anyway why dont you take the essentials and have a back up bag at home with enough stuff for another 2 or 3 nights just in case.
for my bag i had (havent packed this one yet. oops) hot water bottle, power aide, muesli bars for DH, clothes to wear home. dressing gown, camera, capsule full of all the baby stuff (2 sets of clothes, nappies, wipes, blanket) and i think that was about it. i wore a gown during delivary, and the hosp supplied pads and soap and stuff so that cut down on my packing. you may want toothpaste/brush though in case you labour overnight and want to feel a bit freshened up or take photos etc...

1 night in hospital then 3 at Rangiora Hospital for aftercare. This time i'll be staying less, I'd rather recover at home in my own bed. Not worried about the toddler, he's a daddy's boy and doesnt cling to me.
