Topic: Any point in worrying?? Posted: 13 December 2009 at 7:04pm |
Hiya everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas/advice for my situation?
In the last few weeks my lower abdomen has been feeling uniformly hard when i press on it (not muscles trust me haha) and it has started to protrude a lil just below my bbutton. Have had about three neg poas tests, a negative hcg blood test, and all other routine blood tests are normal.
I have been to a gp and he had no idea so don't fancy going back there- nxt step would be an ultrasound, but tryna dcide if its worth doing that just yet, altho if i was pregnant the baby would be born by the time i got an appt i think lol
I really dont think i could be pregnant, but has anyone heard of a situation like this/know what else causes this?

Forget the GP - go straight to the specialist!!! You need a thorough check-up me thinks!

well I would be pushing for an urgent US referral at least. Could be something like fibroids (not wanting to worry you, it just as possibly might not be)
Try a different GP or second opinion, maybe someone you'd feel comfortable having an internal examination with? If it came to it
If you can't get to a specialist soon enough I mean, amybe see if there is a doc who has gynae experience before doing GP work?
Any other symptoms?Pain, irregular bleeding etc

not sure about your area, but I got a standard US referral from GP after first visit (different symptoms), I toddled up to the department and they could fit me in in the next 2 hours - but I could be flexible with time.
Is it really that slow in Palmy?
You might have to pay for US though, my GP initally said 200 bucks (I baulked, quite loudly, somehow I didn't have to pay in the end)

Yeah GP said $160! I think i will try get an US appt then, he said it would be a huge waiting list bt it may not be the case. will see if my tummy get's bigger in the next week and will take the right vitamins etc. jic.
Spose i shud tell the whole story..
Came off b/c in august, had AF on the 18th and 30th. Had a possible oops on the 13th of sept but i really dont think i ovulated. Spotting started a few days later and continued til i started taking vitex last month. Stopped taking it when i noticed my abdo thing. Bleeding has gotten heavier but not what i would call normal AF, very light and always dark brown not red.
My boobs feel huge and i think my areolas are bigger, had a few bouts of nausea but nothing maor.... no other symptoms.
After the many neg tests have been pretty much living like i normally would- having a couple of drinks now and then, not a great diet, meds that may not be safe in preg. so feeling guilty. plus ive had cytomegalovirus- similar to glandular fever- which can cause congenital hearing and vision defects.
I think i might go out and get some elevit, il feel like a crazy person but what the hey. Have been reading a lot of american forums where ppl have been in similar situations and been pg so i gess it's worth acting like an idiot jic i am 'expecting'.
And will do some research into the fibroids possibility. Thanks for the advice so far!

Rach, if you've had a whole string of negative tests, its probably unlikely you are pregnant. Especially, it isn't all that often that an expanding tummy is the first pregnancy symptom you'd have. Also, with pregnancy, I don't think your abdomen should feel uniformly hard. You would be able to palpate the uterus, which is a harder ball kind of shape right down just above your pubic bone, but around that everything should feel normal and the uterus is quite a defined small area.
If you feel like something is not right with your body, get it investigated. I'd be wanting to rule out there being some other problem rather than stressing too much about being pregnant. If you are paying for the ultrasound, the waiting list is less than a month in Palmy IME. If it is fully publicly funded, the wait can be much longer.

I'd get it checked out to Rach, pregnancy would be the least of your worries. It could be a hearnia or fibroids as suggested. Get it checked out as firmness of the abdomin isn't normal.

Rach, I agree with others get it checked out... I'd get a referral for U/S... I too have had lots of spotting and bleeding lately and had U/S and they found a polyp and endometrial cysts or adendomyosis... but fibroids also cause ongoing spotting and bleeding probs... My referal took 6 weeks and it was a nonurgent one, so not oo bad (oh and it was free)...

What the others said, definitely get an ultrasound asap. My friend just had a fibroid removed last week that was twice the size of her uterus! She had no other symptoms apart from noticing her abdomen was expanding. I'm not saying that's what you have but they will be able to tell straight away via an ultrasound. Good luck!

well i just went to another gp and she said there is no point getting a scan. She said it's just bloating. I'v had bloating b4 and it didnt feel like this, but im drinking this dirt-jelly-like fibre stuff anyway.... She also gave me this progestogen stuff to stop the bleeding. It's probably silly but if my iron levels are fine im going to just wait a few weeks and not take it. It sounds similar to provera and i do not want to be putting that crap into my body again even if doc does recommend it.. If belly gets bigger or there is significant pain i will demand a scan. If symptoms subside with the mucilax i'll assume she was right.
Anyway just an update. Do u think this is a good plan?
Thanx again for ur input guys.

How frustrating! I was the same when my dr wanted me to take Provera to stop the bleeding a few weeks ago... mine did stop after 3 weeks thank goodness... but I was worried about mucking up my hormones further... Hopefully it is just bloating but I agree you should demand a scan if not better in a few weeks... things take long enough in the health system as it is...

Sounds like a good thing that you don't need a scan! (and sounds like after two gps advice and normal bloods, that they both are consistent with their thoughts)
...I would feel a bit embarassed to "demand" a scan for them to tell confirm I was bloated...or constipated...!!
Take care!

sally - I understood the first GP didn't know what was causing the bleeding and bloating and thought the next step in the diagnostic process would be ultrasound. The 2nd thought it was bloating. I had BTs until they were coming out my ears but they can't tell you about everything. I would not be embarassed at all to find out from an u/s that all is ok as it is sometimes the only way to know... gynae probs can be hard to diagnose!

That's awesome, Rach - if it's just a wee bit of bloating you won't have to worry about all the complications that come with something more serious.
Personally, I'd take the pills. My body is all up the wop when it comes to cycling, and while I like to understand the pills I'm taking, and know what they are doing, I see them more as an aid to get my body back to the healthy balance it's meant to be in, rather than screwing it up further. The medications I've had, I've had very good experiances with - even though they didn't fix the problem entirely, they did a lot to help my body get back into a more healthy and natural balance.
So in short, I'd follow the Drs advice, and hopefully it will all clear up and you won't need to worry anymore. If you've got any concerns after that, perhaps pop back, but I reckon chances are it will all sort itself out.

just an update:
the day afta my last post the bleeding stopped. didnt hafta take the pills so was pretty stoked. Belly (im calling it that coz it looks like one lol) has gotten bigger- i look pregnant it's really strange. Still neg urine tests tho. Thinking bout going to get an US soon just to find out what's going on... if its bloating surely it wouldn't be pushing my stomach out this bad so im hoping it's nothing serious. I had a lot of bloating when i was on depo and it doesnt feel the same!
anyway not tryna be a drama queen just really confused atm
