Topic: Any other mums out there with Hyperemesis Posted: 11 April 2010 at 8:36am |
Hi
I am pregnant with my second baby, and once again am suffering from Hyperemesis. Last time I was throwing up once every morning right until I gave birth, and I carried my little pot everywhere with me as I still had the odd rough day. I was taking cyclizine.
This time I once again started feeling really ill at about 5 and a half weeks, and now I am 11 weeks and still really suffering. After a few days stay in hospital they put me on zofran and cyclizine, but I have decided to only take them once a day as I am nervous about harming my wee one. hopefully once I hit 2nd trimester I will be able to up the dosage. I was throwing up all day, but now I am on the meds as long as I am lying down I am ok - I can only get up and about, or sit in a chair, for very short bursts at a time. Evenings are the worst
I am basically just wondering if there is anyone else out there that is going through this? It's so horrible, and seems endless. I am getting weary of every day being the same and the constant nausea. Last time I got antenatal depression, and I am feeling a lot better in myself this time - won't be going there again - but it is still very hard.

Know exactly how you feel!Am 18 weeks and still suffering.Like you was in hospital and put on zofran which I'm still taking(1/2 tablet 2-3 times a day).
I also had it im my last pregnancy. It does get you down.I feel especially bad as I dont really have the energy to play with DS 23 months.I wish I had some wise words for you but just wanted you to know I know exactly how you feel.

Have you considered accupuncture? I dont have hyperemesis but I do get some nasty morning sickness with throwing up min once a day, up to about 5 and it generally lasts until 20w for me. I tried the drug route with Jared but it didn't really work but this time I've tried accupuncture and its working really well. It does wear off but then I go get it done again and its brilliant. It doesn't get rid of all the nausea but it has made a hell of a difference for me.

I am now 10 weeks and my MS started at about 5 weeks. By 7 weeks I had lost 6kg and could not keep food or liquid down. Went to the GP to get some Maxillon (sp?) which did not really help as I vomitted it straight back up. I ended up in hospital for nearly a week where I was on fluids the enitre time to get me rehydrated.
I left the hospital with more maxillon, cyclizine, pyridoxone & thiamine (the last two are B vitamines, I think B12 and B6?) and an increased dose of FA 5mg instead of 0.8mg
I am slowly getting better and now manage to drink more which is helping a lot. I had not been taking the cyclizine latley as it made me so tired. My MW recommended to take one when I get up during the night to have toilet stop. I have done that the past two nights and did not feel sick yesterday morning at all! This morning was ok to but I vomitted up my pancakes which I think I ate to fast
In general now I'm sick mornings and night only and am ok during the day as long as I snack on a regular basis. Craving lots of sugar drinks and sweets.
Oh and my MW assured me the drugs will not harm the baby at all. There are stronger drugs available to manage this, drugs similar to the type prescribed for really bad nausea when undergoing chemo. So what we are taking at the moment is mild compared to them

Hold out hope it might disappear i was horribly sick (although never quite bad enough to be hospitalised all though at time i wished they would take me) and with this second preg it got so much better around 15-18 wks i still feel ill in the morning until i get my coffee and some food and still throw up some mornings but its soo much better than the not keeping anything down not wanting to move that was those earlier weeks. With Josh i was sick everyday without fail until 34ish wks when i finished work (put it down to stress in the end) so this time is much better.

Lou - Thank you for sharing, I just wanted to know that I wasn't the only one who was suffering! I mean, I know that I'm not, but sometimes you start to feel a bit isolated. Taking 1/2 tablet 2-3 times a day sounds like a good idea...how are your evenings? I take a whole zofran in the morning and then a cyclizine about 3pm but my evenings are awful - i don't think the cyclizine is working
kebakat - thanks for the idea, i don't think i'm brave enough though!
susyl - oh poor you, i only lost a couple of kg before i went into hosp. To be honest I think maxalon is a bit useless for HG sufferers...someone else correct me if I'm wrong? It never had any effect on me and I'm not allowed to take it anymore as I had a reaction to it - my jaw clenched up and spasm'd all night, it was awful. The zofran is the one that they give to chemo patients, i was told at the hospital it was safe, but i googled around anyway and it seems to be very common to give for HG. And yes, I snack all day too which definitely helps! And I find the best thing is to just go for what your stomach wants, whatever it is.
WRXandJosh - I really hope it will ease up then!!

Accupuncture doesn't hurt at all! I had never tried it prior to this. But was willing to do damn near anything to make myself feel better. To me it feels like a teeny insect bite when the little needle things go in and then its over. I don't feel them coming out and I just lie there and relax while they are in and she uses some heat stick thing on me.

Muppetsmama-The cyclazine didnt work for me either and it made me so groggy that when I was in hospital I ended up refusing to take it.Maxalon on it's own didnt work for me but taking it along with the zofran seems to help a bit.
I was on 1 zofran tablet a day before going into hospital but it wasnt working. It wasnt till I was in hospital and saw the specialist that she suggested taking half a tablet 3 times a day and maxalon as well. That combo seems to work the best for me.I was told if I could to cut the zofran back to 2 a day eventually.
I now take 1/2 a zofran morning and night and maxalon in between. The vomiting has eased but the nausea is still dreadful,it usually wakes me about 4am in the morning.I'm ok in the nights.
I really hope you get some relief soon.

Oh it is HORRID!!!!
I can absolutely relate...it's yuk yuk yuk, poor you.
I'm 28 weeks, still sick most days, and am still thankful I have the odd zofran wafer to take! Metoclopromide (maxalon) and cyclizine didn't work for me at all either, so I don't even try these now as I'd prefer not to take them at all if they don't do anything to help. But, just wanted to say that even though I'm still sick, it's definitely WAY better than it was in first trimester - I think things improved a bit around 15-16 weeks. I'm able to cope with work and life in general now! I'm just sick in the mornings and some evenings...and the nausea for me is now manageable during the day with food, which is SO much more satisfying than not being able to even tolerate water in first trimester.
I also used acupuncture/ acupressure. I'm not sure if they helped or not...though I persevered with them for quite a while just in case!
GOOD LUCK and FEEL BETTER SOON

I was really sick with Emily for the whole pregnancy this time thank god i was only sick from week 8-14.
With Emily i was on maxalon, cyclizine and ondanzatron as well as 1litre of fluids every few days for rehydration, to be honest i the rehydration was what helped the most its a nasty little circle once you get dehydrated your more sick so if you can get frequent iv rehydration that may help i also found that the maxalon tablets did nothing and i was having that iv too.
All the best hope it dose not last too long for you.

Thanks for the input, I agree about the hydration, I found that going to the emergency department (at middlemore) was rubbish as you just sit about for around 6 hours for 1 litre of fluid, but if you can admitted then it is sheer bliss...instant care and 4 bags of fluid over 12 hours!!
In case any of you go to middlemore, I recently found out that they have an early pregnancy clinic that you can go to for prompt rehydration - wish I had known this last time as it would have saved me long hours in ED!
Will ask my MW about changing my meds to that 1/2 tablet 3x, it sounds like it would work well for me too. How much do you have to pay for it? I last bought 30 tablets and it cost me $75!!

Muppetsmama-I pay the same price as you for the tablets. They're expensive aren't they?My GP looked into if I could get them subsidised but was told the only way you can get them subsidised is if you're having chemo.
I happened to go to a different pharmacy the other day and the pharmacist said he could give me the first 6 tablets at a subsidised price($3) but I'd have to come back and collect the rest of the script and they would be full price. My regular pharmacist said he cant do that.
Do you have health insurance? We made a few claims with Southern cross a few weeks ago and we put in the receipts for the zofran and they accepted them.

No unfortunately we don't have health insurance That's great that they accepted your receipts!
Yes they can do that with the 6 at a time - that way it is subsidised, but the govt only sub for 12 a month, 6 at a time, which is a bit useless for us poor mums!

Hi everyone. Muppetsmama. I too share a similar experience to you. Suffered with hyperemis my entire pregnancy with my DS. I lost weight, was hospitalised several times and almost had to have a tube down my nose! And was bedridden for weeks. I wanted so much to enjoy my pregnancy, but for the most part, I couldn't. It eased up towards the end with, but til the day I gave birth I was stil vomiting 1-2 times. I took a combination of cyclizine and Zofran every single day from about 6 weeks through to 40 weeks. While it didn't stop the nausea or vomitting, I like to think it maybe took some of the edge off. I was worried about what it would do to DS. But in the end it wasn't a war worth fighting. DS was just fine! And weighed 7lbs 13oz. I am now pregnant with #2 and I'm absoulutely terrified. At the moment I am feeling absolutely fine. It's such a horrible feeling. I am excited, but also so worried it's going to happen again, and wondering how I will look after DS. Only time will tell I guess! But it's lovely to have the support and company on here, of others in a similar situation. I hope to all going through this, that you all have a good support network, cos that helps.
