Topic: Advice Needed Posted: 27 May 2008 at 8:48am |
Okay girls, I need a bit of advice.
So tomorrow is wednesday, which is the day they said to come back and we'll do induction again. Now, induction freaked me out SO MUCH, that I totally couldnt handle it (when in fact I should have been more of a hard arse and dealt with the tiny bit of pain/people poking and prodding etc) I never expected it to be nice and easy, dont get me wrong, but man..
Now, I am lucky that I still have a truckload of patience left cuz me and Matt are thinking that either a) they let me have my c-section or b) they can stuff off and i'll just wait til he arrives on his own.
I've not slept more than an hour at a time since I came home from the hospital on saturday morning - i'm really freaking out about tomorrow - have been since they said to come back. And I know I probably sound like a complete chicken, but it really traumatized me. Not to mention the fact that (and i know you all know) hospital beds ARGH! I dont know how they expect one to sleep on them? my poor back/hip. Honestly.
So am I being too much of a complainy pants? or do you guys think that I'm well within my rights to say no and wait if they wont give me what I want? I'll be giving my MW a ring a bit later on, but both Matt and I want me to be as relaxed as possible about this whole thing! (as relaxed as can be expected anyway)

Why are they inducing you early? If there is a good reason for them to be doing it early then I would tend to go with the docs, but then I dont really know your situation. I havent been induced, but have to say that labour can be pretty unpleasant and you may have people poking around a bit and its just what needs to be done to get baby out safely.

Oh sorry, no I have other medical issues with my back and right hip which warranted having a c-section to start with, but they just wouldnt do it. Their excuse is they have enough pain relief to make me comfortable. I know the pros and cons of natural vs c-section, but for my own personal wellbeing and sanity we decided to go with the c-section instead.

i would like to think it's entirely up to you if you are induced tomorrow or just wait it out until he decides he's ready to come out!
if the only reason for induction is because of the back/hip, then surely they will be happy to let you start things naturally if that's what you want (if no c/s allowed)
if you do wait til things start naturally, i'm sure it will be easier on your body than being induced......not that i've ever been induced, but when faced with the possibility, i was warned that it can make labour more intense. but you've probably been told that before.
good luck hun stick to your guns..it's your body, your baby!

yip it is your body and your baby- and if there is no medical reason for being induced (high bp, small baby etc..) im sure you are well within your rights to wait until bubs decides to come on his own, unless a medical issue comes up.
you have to be happy and comfortable with descions made... and yeah! you have the right to be a comlainy pants!! your pregnant and due! lol, just think back to me a few weeks back
thinking of you xoxox

I agree, express your worries with your MW.
Labour really is an unplesant business. While I was in labour I ended up with a group of hospital staff (about 6 I think) in my room prodding between my legs. Once Daniel was here though, I really didn't care what had happened.

I agree abot talking to your midwife or get DH to if you don't think you can explain your views strongly enough.
I think it's odd that they want to induce you before your even due. If they won't do a c/s and they don't have a medical reason for induction I ask them to put it off until at least monday and until then insist on getting the to do regular sweeps. Some mw say that a sweep only helps if you are already starting to dialate but they did it for my first pgy when I was nowhere near dialating the day before they were going to induce me and 9hours and a bit of pethedine later I was holding my baby girl.
I haven't been induced so I'm not too sure but I think you can just ask for the gel application then go home and wait for things to happen instead of being stuck on a drip at the hospital.
It's important that you do what your comfortable because you should feel in control.
Goodluck

I agree, if there are no risks to baby, and you are really uncomfy with the idea of induction, I'd be waiting to give bub a chance to come on his own.
I haven't had a c-sect so I have no experience there, but I'd think that there is just as much poking and prodding involved as with a vaginal delivery so I'd say either way you are going to have to put up with a certain degree of manhandling. If you talk to your midwife about your concerns, she should be able to put you at ease and minimise the amount of internals etc. that you have to have. If you labour naturally you will probably have fewer internals than if you are induced, as there tends to be more intervention with induction.
Once you're in established labour tho and having contractions you'll probably find you don't care much about the exams etc. you'll be too focussed on getting bub out!
Best of luck!

I would probably try to labour naturally as well, seeing as you haven't met your due date yet.
Also, for the c-sect you'll have an epi which can really screw up your back so you probably would want to avoid that if you have a bad back anyway (I have a slipped disc and a compressed upper spine but had an epi and it did take a while to get back to normal).
But definitely talk to your m/w. Unfortunately though, you leave your dignity at the door whether you go VB or c-sect so either way its going to be icky. I gave birth in front of 8 people but to be honest I didn't care at all, I just wanted him out safe and sound.

Have a talk with your mw about it. She may agree to give you a stretch and sweep or even to try something like gel to get you started, rather than the full-on induction process.
Can you definitely not have the c/s? What's the story with that? Are they too busy?

Busymum - Chch are really really anal about intervention, I was supposed to be induced between 38-39 weeks with Jack due to his size, but because they were so busy they 'didn't get round to it'. So they won't do anything unless they're 100% sure it can't be avoided.

Good luck MissAngel, will be thinking of you for tomorrow.
I think it needs to be your decision - if you're not comfortable then go with that feeling and talk to your midwife about ways to minimise your fears/concerns and come out with the best plan possible for the situation. Another way to look at it is that you are being proactive about your birth and treatment - not complaining at all!
Have you spoken to your midwife yet? How are you feeling now?

Sorry for not replying earlier - i've been so worked up since I woke up yesterday. I'm about to leave for the hospital now too. My midwife is pretty much the same about this as I am - she said to me that if I didnt want to do this second induction then I dont have to - hell its only 2 days til my due date anyway now.
Emz - you're so right, they really are anal about intervention. Nevermind the fact that I have medical reasons as to why this needs to be done - no-one ever reads the notes and you never get to see the same person twice anyway.
Anyway, I've decided to have a nice big glass of harden up and just do it - I've made Matt wait long enough I think - even tho he wants what I want (so he says) I'm just over being in pain all the time and having no more than an hours sleep in one block because of my hip cramping and me needing to pee (remind me to install a catheter next time yes?)
At least once this monster is out I can go back on my old pain relief and get on with life. Thats been the hardest thing during being pg is not being able to have my pills - hence why I was in a wheelchair etc.
Oh well, next time I post i'll have a baby with me.
