Hi there
Just wondering, those of you who have had Hyperemesis and then gone on to have more children whether you got it in subsequent pregnancies?
I was really sick with DD1 and then even worse with DD2 and was hospitalised for a week due to dehydration and ketones etc. I would like to have a 3rd but am unsure what my chances are of it happening again, or worse?

i had it with my first, in fact i vomited every 20 mins of the day and night till i had her, this time i had it but not as bad and it didnt last the entire 9 months ( or hasnt) i still have my moments but not anywhere as bad as the first time.... my doctor said his sister had it with all 4 of her pregnancys... this time i found constantly eating ice blocks helped, they seemed not to come up as much as a sip of water did, kept me hydrated much better anyways...

I had it bad with Maya and ended up in hospital, vomited every day till about 16 weeks and spent the rest of the time feeling revolting. Was worse with the gremlins, I had ptyalism and vomited every day from 5 weeks pregnant till they were born at 36 weeks. Some days I couldn't get out of bed, I had to have IV fluids, it was awful.
This time round I ended up in hospital again at 7 weeks for 4 days of IV fluids and antiemetics, and I was so sick that when I started bleeding at 8 weeks I almost hoped I'd lose baby just to feel well again. I stopped the 24-7 vomiting around 16 weeks but am 39 weeks this coming Sunday and still vomiting every morning plus strugglng with ongoing nausea and the ptyalism again.
I agree with Clueless, when I was really bad lemonade iceblocks were all I could tolerate. I also found a cocktail of antiemetics helped take the edge off altho it didn't stop me vomiting.
We have decided this is our last baby definitely this time, and a big part of that is how sick I get when I'm pregnant, I can't subject my body to this again. I have wicked reflux from the ptyalism and it's stripped all the enamel from my teeth, not to mention the effect that being so sick all the time has ha don my mental health, and on my poor family who have been soooo patient with me.

lol i went thru 2 or 3 boxes of the lemonade popsicles each week for some reason they stayed down longer.. in saying that they didnt make me feel any better though i still felt  24/7

I was wondering the same thing! We want #2 sometime but my Mum said that hers got worse with each subsequent pregnancy. I hope that doesn't happen to me! My MW tried to make me feel better and said that every pregnancy is different.
Iceblocks are nice, even if they don't stay down half the time at least you are getting a bit of fluid and something to help your blood sugar levels, etc.

i'm another one who has had in following pregnancies not nice i hav hd it with my boys but not my girl. i'm now having # 4 baby and so hope it doesn't happen this time but in the end it is worth it feel. it was worse with my first boy tho was sick for longer and was in hospital for longer.

Mine was worst with the gremlins which is understandable given that they are twins and even women who don't usually get hyperemesis can get it with multiples, but I think it's been much of a muchness in both my singleton pregnancies, I wouldn't say it was worse this time. What has made it much, much harder is having toddlers to deal with while I'm feeling so crappy coz they have boundless energy and they don't understand why Mummy is sick. The day I ended up going to the hospital I physically could not get out of bed and I had to get Maya to look after the gremlins till the nanny arrived coz I had so little energy that getting up made me just about pass out, and every time I stood up I vomitted.

ive had hyperemesis with my first,2nd and 3rd pregnancy but only carried through with my 3rd pregnancy. my first pregnancy was hell! and the degree of hell was the same as my 3rd! il talk about my 3rd....i was hopitalised at 6weeks and from there threw up every 20 minutes until about 20weeks-ptyalism carried on til third trimester........so for the first 5-6 months i stayed in bed and i didnt take the meds prescribed by the hospital because i feared harming baby.........i couldnt even sleep at night waking up to spew-even though my stomach was empty......some nights i would wish to die! even getting up to bathe was hell!.....but because i had it with my previous pregnancies i knew it was coming.......but when it came i thought why the hell did i do this to myself! and my family!............
when i found out i was pregnant this time round my husband and i prepared ourselves for another round of hell! but you know what? i didnt get it........yea sure i got MS but i tell you MS is hundred times better than hyperemesis! and MS was all gone at about 16weeks.........i always told people if it wasnt for hyperemesis i would have 10 babies! because i loved giving birth......this pregnancy has given me hope that i can have more babies- i can actually do things that "normal pregnant people can do.........so as my first was a girl....i know this is a boy!...........my husband used to tell me every pregnancy will be different and there are stories of people who had it with one and not the other....... after 3 pregnancies of hell i didnt think so........i guess next time i can only hope for a boy?

Thanks to everyone for your replies, i confirmed what i thought, so the chances are pretty high for having HG again.. i think at this stage we will have to have a good think over the next year or so and see what happens from there!

Wow! i felt great pleasure in reading this! i'm too a former sufferer and had very similar experience previously. Now 4 weeks pregnant i am anxiously awaiting HG toi strike however hear many stories of how its not repeated in oter pregnancies so at same time holding my breath.
I too would have many a child if all i had to cope with was MS, felt like i took it for granted when thats all i had to put up with for X-months! Suppose at week 4 for me it is a waiting game for at least another week anyhow!!! Eating loads at the moment  because i know im gonna miss the smells and taste of my favourite foods pretty soon  ...wishing you all the best!

Just thought I would put my two cents worth in. I had HG with my first pg (girl) and it took my 5 years to get up the courage to 'do it' again! Mt specialist said that unfortuately, unlike what a lot of people say, if you have had HG then the chance of you having it again is round the high 70%'s. I am 21 weeks pregnant with a boy and had HG again just differently. Vomitted at different times and it has gone on much longer. I did take the drugs as I couldn't deal emotionally with feeling so dreadful. This pg I have been on Zofran (last time on cyclazine iv) which has meant I have stayed out of hosp this time. Have still had terrible nausea but have managed to keep enough fluids down. This will be our last pg as I cannot physically or emotionally go through this again. Have had to quit my job this time round and will be very happy just having the two! I find it amazing that something so natural as pregnancy can have such adverse effects on a woman. Good luck for your decision!
