Hi Dorothy, thanks very much for your presentation, it was great! I was wondering how you know when they are ready for solids? My son is ten weeks so a bit early yet but just getting prepared. Thanks, Alison and Joshua.

Hi Dorothy thanks so much for your talk! From 6wks we've been down at 7/7.30, 10/11 for a late feed then sleeping till 6/7. 5mths now She often wakes for the late nite feed but if she doesn't I've always woken her to keep it 'routine' - was afraid of leaving and having to feed in the night and encouraging 'night waking'. Every time I've tried to give up this feed I end up with 1am and 5am wake ups.
Now starting to wake much more in the night and evening. eg. waking at 9.15pm, resettling but then waking at 10.30pm. Same at 4/5ish - waking half to hour later. Does this mean its genuine hunger or should I try resettling yet again? Just seems like a long time to keep resettling from 9.15 through to morning if it happens multiple times! Just starting solids, exclusively bf.

Hi Alison There are various ways of knowing when they are ready for solids but ideally somewhere between 4 and 6 months.
I tend to go on the weight of the baby as one of the factors. ANother is if I have a baby that has been sleeping through the night and happy and contented in the day and suddenly this changes and they are between the ages i mentioned above.

Hi I would suggest re settling at that early night feed as this could be contributing to her night waking. I have found that this feed is also one of the hardest to drop with some babies.
It is important to ensure you are feeding for hunger and not comfort and the only way to do this is to resettle whenever she wakes. This does not mean to say you don't feed, however if you do at less 20 to 30 minutes of resettling each time she wakes then if she does not settle then you would feed her.
Are u feeding her before she goes back for her naps to ensure she is getting enough breast during the day. I feed when they wake and then 15 to 30 minutes before going back to bed for their naps I re offer the breast to ensure they have full tummies before they go for their naps or bed for the night.

Hi Ladies Thank you for all your questions and hopefully the answers will help you. It was lovely to meet you all at the OHBaby Coffee Catchup.
Remember before you do anything STOP, THINK, and ACT – work out what you are doing, why you are doing, and what you are trying to accomplish and then act.
Remember YOU are the baby’s mum and so listen to your heart and instinct. Yes, we all don’t do it by the book, or get it right the first time, but you need to make ‘mistakes’ to get it right for you. It’s a time of learning a little person’s personality and figuring out what works for your home life.
If you have the time I would love to see you pop over to

and 'like' it. You can then keep up with information that I post from time to time or hear from other mothers who write on the wall. Also a great giveaway at the moment to win a Sophie the Giraffe
Please remember as a parent or carer that you should understand and acknowledge that Dorothy is NOT a licensed medical doctor or other licensed medical provider and the information that I share with you has come from experience and working with numerous families and babies and toddlers
