Topic: Dates??? Help! Posted: 30 October 2008 at 8:07am |
Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit confused with my dates. Some comments would be helpful.
16 March - go off pill
23 April - VFP
24 April - Bleeding and cramping
25 April - HCG tests showing 2 so doc said early m/c
Pgcy symptoms continue to get worse
Last week May - BFP
6 June - Scan dates us at 5 weeks 4 days approx (are these accurate??)
20 week scan shows conception date at 21 April
Baby now measuring 2-3 weeks ahead of dates
The thing that is confusing me is that even if 21st April is an approximate, I was have a m/c around that time and DH and I didn't have sex for a good few weeks after.
So, did I not loose the first baby and am actually over 30 weeks, or did I loose the baby and my dates are up the muck??
I'm so confused.

All I know is that I have been told that the first scan is the most accurate with dates, and they are less accurate as they weeks go on, as babies grow at different rates than others. So I would go by the first scan date.
I have heard of so many people who have been told that they have had MC and are still PG, so who knows, there are so many different opinions out there.
Congratulations on nearly reaching 30 weeks either way, it felt like a real milestone to me, not long to go now!

My understanding is the earlier the scan the more accurate it is. Therefore in your position I would go with the EDD they gave you at the scan when they had you measuring 5 weeks 4 days.
Have you talked to your midwife about it? With Spencer my midwife thought I felt a couple of weeks further along so she double checked the dates given at the 12 week scan (I was unsure of my lmp) and was happy to go by that. I then ended up having a growth scan at 35 weeks (for other reasons) and he didn't measure ahead at that so I might have just either had a lot of fluid or perhaps cos they missed he was breech that made me feel bigger?

I wonder if you didnt miscarry but that the bleeding and cramping was implantation and the blood test just wasnt accurate. If you'd tested a few days later....who knows?
Either way.....your pregnant and basically bubs will come when he/she is ready. You look around 30weeks from you belly pics. I dont know how they can tell people are 2 weeks ahead...thats a lot. I have always been told "about right for dates". I'd go off your initial scan as that is usually only +/- 4 days where as by 12 wks I think they are +/- week and then it gets worse.

If you did concieve on the 21st April then your HCG levels on the 25th April at 4 days past conception are probably about right (I think at that time they should be somewhere between 0-50) but then that doesn't explain how you got a VFP on the 23rd April as even the most sensitive tests only measure HCG levels about 15-25.
It is possible (although unlikely) to release 2 eggs during your cycle so there's a chance that there were two fertilised eggs, one earlier that miscarried and one slightly later that implanted but that's a stab in the dark really.
I'd just go with the original scan too and as nzpiper said this baby will come when he/she is ready.

Thanks guys. I guess it just would have been nice to think that perhaps we hadn't lost one. It was so early and we'd only just found out but it's still upsetting just the same. I'll talk to my MW just in case she has any concerns re the dates so she knows where abouts I might be at for when labour starts.
I think it's unlikely that it is the same baby but it's just really weird as we didn't have sex. We started TTC hard out the next month but by the time we started, I was already pregnant again lol. I just thought the horny monster had hit due to hormones with my cycle etc but no, it was pgcy symptoms!!

Scans that are done 10 weeks and below are accurate by +/- 1 day. So the scan that you had that showed you at 5 weeks 4 days is the one you go by for your EDD.
Any scans after 10 weeks are inaccurate, as this is when genetic and environmental factors come into play in regards to the size of the baby. For example, I knew when I had my LMP and when I ovulated, so when I had my dating scan at 8 weeks 5 days, I measured at that date exactly.
However, when I went for my nuchal scan at 12 weeks 4 days, the baby was measuring 2 weeks ahead
So I would only go by what you measured at your dating scan, not anatomy scan. Even at my anatomy scan, my baby was measuring nearly 3 weeks ahead, but I know that is just due to genetics.

I have a 10 day difference in my LMP date and my scan dates. Going by my LMP i'm due on the 11th Feb 09 but I dont have a 28 day cycle so maybe the 14th ish! Then when I went for an early scan ( I thought I was about 8 weeks) I was told I was only 6w5days putting my due date at 21st feb. I'm happy to go with thescan date as I dont want to be induced too early like I was with DD.
All my scans have measured the same 21st as being my due date.
It's so confusing! What did they do before scans came along!

They thought my mum was a month ahead with my brother so when she was 8 months they took a sample of her amniotic fluid and tested it. Turns out she was right, she was just carrying a huge amount of water that made it seem like she was further ahead.

It's all a bit confusing but my guess would be either implantation bleeding or if not, that there was a twin lost.

They thought my mum was a month ahead too but she knew exactly when she concieved and completely ignored the docs EDD (which came and went a month before my big sis was born). She just carried big, I'm guessing that's where I get it from.

Yeah my mum knew as well, cos she saved herself until she was married. Bless her. But the docs wouldn't listen until they had done the test. At the start of her pg they thought she was carrying twins. She didn't carry as big with the rest of us, so my brother gets the blame for all her stretch marks.

I suppose before scans babys were just born when they were ready, without people telling them when they were supposed to be!
I agree with the later scan dates being inaccurate. I had a scan at 38wks, baby was only measuring about 34-36 wks, but I went into labour the next day...
