Topic: URGENT HELP! Buffet food Posted: 09 May 2007 at 7:04am |
OK so we just found out we're pregnant (probably 5 weeks if taken from my last AF) and I'm going out for a special lunch today with friends and family - booked heaps in advance and nothing I can get out of.
It's buffet.
What can/can't I eat?!?!!
We haven't gone to the doctor yet to confirm, so won't even be telling close family yet, so they won't know.
I'll be leaving at 8.30am for work and won't be able to check here after then, so thanks in advance for your help!

no soft cheeses like camenbert and brie - or feta if uncooked.
no ham or deli meat - you can eat it if cooked though - but up to you.
no seafood.
of course, these are guides and you *could* eat them if you wanted to.. many women do. but these are what they recommend not to eat.
I can't remember any more sorry, it has been a while since I was pregnant!

Hi, Well the things i avoided from the buffet was chicken, all their salad, seafood etc. I ate their hot meat and chippies. And kept and eye out when they were bringing more food out from the kitchen and pounced on that.
I probably wouldnt eat their fruitsalad or any of the stuff that has cream in it or their soft cheeses.
lol doesnt leave much does it.

Ive never eaten buffet foods while pregnant just cause msot the buffet restaurants Ive seen the food doesn't look 100% to me but I'm fussy as when it comes to food whetehr Im pregnant or not.
You could always ask the waiter if they would be able to make you a frsh salad, some places are very accomodating and will do it (I have asked before hehe).

Do you know how hard it is to find a list of unsafe foods? Just googled it..
I found this in my pregnancy book:
to avoid:
raw and slightly cooked eggs, as there is a risk of salmonella poisoning.
soft cheeses, pate, sliced meats of chopped chicken, raw fish and shellfish and any pre-made salads that have been standing for a while, eg in supermarkets. With all of these products there is a risk of listeriosis.
You don't need to make it obvious about being pregnant, I managed to hide my pregnancy for the first 12 weeks despite going to lots of dinners and things where I had to avoid foods. You're lucky you don't have morning sickness yet otherwise you probably wouldn't want to eat much

Some buffet restraunts only open at lunchtime, which will make the food freshness at it's optimum. You just need to be a bit more careful than usual about whether things look fresh/hot etc. Meats: eat piping hot ones. Salads: ok if they haven't been sitting too long and are not touching anything like cold meat/cheese that may contaminate them. Desserts: watch out for cream. Drinks: avoid alcohol, and a lot of people also choose to avoid caffeine (although the odd tea/coffee won't hurt).
The trickiest one will be watching out for raw eggs. Steer well clear from home-made mayo's and anything in the dessert section that looks a bit funny.
So long as you don't act (feel) too self-conscious, I reckon you'll pull it off easily. My boss used to avoid wine at lunchtime so he didn't have it on his breath for the afternoon clients... could be a nice excuse if you need one.

You'd probably be ok to go for the green salads, but avoid coleslaw potato salad etc. Stick to the cooked veges if there are any. Hot meat good, cold meats, maybe not.
A good excuse (though didnt work inmy case) is to say to anyone who asks, you arent feeling well so not very hungry.....mind you people guess pretty quick.
Congrats and good luck
