Hi and hopefully this isnt TMI for a first post
I am 21 weeks pregnant and have been getting abscesses on my stomach and in my armpits for about the last 8 weeks.
The doc has had to give me antibiotics with little or no effect and getting them lanced is freaking painful!
My SIL is a GP and i only had a breif chat with her on Xmas day about it and she thinks it is likely due to my immune system going though changes and being out of whack.
Has anyone else experienced these or am i the lone sufferer?
Oooh you poor thing. I can only imagine how painful and uncomfortable that must be, especially in your armpits
Although I've never heard of pregnant women being more suceptible to abcesses your SIL is probably right about your lowered immunity or it could be HS which women are more likely to suffer from and which can be caused by hormonal changes (Check out this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidradenitis_suppurativa)
The other thing is maybe see your doctor again to find out if there's any other topical treatment that you can use in conjunction with the abs that might help kick these things in the but. There's also plenty of suggestions for treatment in the link above if you do think it probably is HS (although some aren't appropriate while you're pregnant you could talk to your doc about alternatives).
I'm 25 weeks and have had an absess in my mouth for the past couple of weeks. Had it drained first and then antiobiotics. I was meant to have a tooth taken out, but I can't stand anyone putting anything in my mouth at the moment (dry retch)...and fine when not pregnant. Am going back to dentist today to see if he can do anything today.....hopefully I don't gag or it'll have to continue waiting :(
I had my first and only abscess when I was preg with Maya, altho would only have been about 4 weeks at the time. I had to have it excised under general anaesthetic as it turned septic and started putting down tracks up my arm (it was on my forearm). I have a nasty jagged scar about 2cm long where they removed it. I was freaking out when I found out I was preg coz of the anaesthetic and all the painkillers and heavy duty antibiotics I had been given (I had 7 days in hospital as it didn't heal well) but she was obviously fine. I still wonder if it was coz my immune system was compromised by the pregnancy, but then it may have been just coincidence, especially as it was so early on.

Ouch! Not nice! I asked them if they could just lance mine but coz it had a core and tracks they had to remove the whole thing and they said that would be too major to do under local anaesthetic. It just felt a wee bit overdramatic having surgery and then a week in hospital for a tiny abscess, my friend was in less than that having a hip replacement!
