Topic: Tummy sleeping? Posted: 06 January 2010 at 2:20pm |
I am a big tummy sleeper, I have always found I would roll around and then finally lye on my tummy and I would just go to sleep... I have heard its not good to sleep on your tummy when PG, and then others have said from 20 weeks or 25 weeks, and then others who have said so long as its not uncomfy then its ok to sleep on it...
Which is right? Ive been trying to avoid sleeping on my tummy but I just dont sleep as well. I dont want to be doing any harm to bubs, my placenta is anterior so still cant feel it, which is hopefully cushioning it a little more, but if it was kicking me because it was uncomfortable then I wouldnt be able to know?
Hmm sorry a bit long winded, any suggestions?
TIA!

I stopped tummy sleeping early on Emmi. I, like you, have an anterior placenta and shared similar concerns. I found the best way for me was to pack myself in with pillows a couple high, and then prop my top thigh on the pillows. It let me lean forward like sleeping on my tummy but gave baby a bit of protection as well. You need to make sure that they are big fat pillows though, and it does feel a bit funny to start with. And rolling over can be a bit of a pain - but worth it if it means you can get some sleep. Its only now I'm starting to have issues again cos bump is getting so big!

Took me a while to work out it was you!! Far out your motoring along!! Not long to go now!!
I have been bringing my top knee up and bending it so the weight is on it instead of my tummy (have always slept like that with one leg up, but have rolled a bit further over to give my tummy some room (hope that makes sense?)). Im not sure I could handle a few more pillows in our bed, I like my space! But will give it a go I think Thanks hun!

Thanks Hippymamma, I take it your kids turned out fine depsite it?

Or you can do what I did - DH is sleeping in the spare bed cos this mama needs the space for all the pillows!! Hehe all 7 of them!!! Its a bit of trial and error, but you'll work it out.
I know, tricky aye

the MW i had with DD told me it is fine to tummy sleep until its too uncomfortable to do so. when you feel like you are sleeping on a rugby ball you get much more sleep on your side anyway lol. since being pregnant with her i haven't slept on my tummy even when not pregnant so i didn't have that issue this time around.
at the moment i sleep on my side but kinda on tummy as well with my knee up, like the recovery position. i have tried having my thigh on a pillow but find i get way too hot.

Im a big tummy sleep too and was very worried to at 25+ weeks waking up on my tummy. I spoke to my midwife and she said its fine to do so till you get to uncomfortable to do so when I occasionally still wake on my tummy I don't worry now

I kept rolling in my sleep.. not much you can do about that!!!
It gets too uncomfortable anyway, you get to a point when you just cant (although there are some that seem to be able to all the way).
I found I eased myself to side sleeping. so really slept in the recovery position.
I was told to if its comfortable then its ok... (oh and i had an anterior placenta, and in a couple of weeks you will know when bubs isnt comfortable placenta or not LOL).

Great thanks ladies! I guess I will keep going until I feel uncomfy (or bubs finally tells me to stop squishing it!). Good to know Im not the only one
GBAM, my mum was the same, apparently she would only sleep on her tummy before getting PG with me (her first) and since she was about 3 months she hasnt slept on her tummy, even now (23 years later) it still doesnt feel right!!
Hehe Mel, I hope so, I cant wait to feel this little sucker!!

I didn't hear it was a problem for baby, it just gets uncomfortable when you get bigger. It was actually more uncomfortable earlier in the pregnancy when my boobs were really sensitive but I'm quite comfy again now. But like some of the others I have a knee up, pillow arrangement where I'm really only 3/4 on my front. And I got a bean bag for Christmas that I dig a hole for my belly if I want to snooze completely on my stomach.

Yes, both of my girls are happy and healthy, and in utero would always let me know if they weren't completely comfortable!

I was a big tummy sleeper and I knew it would be an issue. I didn't feel snuggled up. So I got a pillow and put it next to me rested my top half on it, almost in a tummy sleep position, this took the pressure off my tummy and I bent my knees. It worked pretty well. Now I am too uncomfortable and big...I can't even turn in my sleep anymore, I have to wake up to turn to the other side.

I was a bit confused about tummy sleeping too, especially after 25 weeks when it still felt perfectly fine! Only in the last 2 or 3 weeks has it become uncomfortable, but I find if I kind of ease my bodyweight onto my bump from being on my hands and knees bubba will move back to make room for me and it will be comfy again. Such a good boy!
If it's not uncomfortable, it shouldn't be a problem at all

Emmi, I'm the same as you - have tended to be a tummy sleeper, and in fact still mostly am. I agree with those who say that there's no reason to stop if it's still comfy for you. The only reason I'm more on my side/tummy these days is cuz of neck issues thanks to whiplash. This time around I'm LOVING my cuddle buddy (you know those lil bean baggy things that have really fine polystyrene in them?) and I tuck it just slightly under/against my tummy so it moulds against it. It's really comfy, takes the pressure off my tummy just enough to not be bothersome and takes up next-to-no space. These days I can't sleep without it :) I think they normally sell them in the middle of malls for about $25 each and they have a great range of colours. Otherwise you could order one from here :-) Hope that helps!
