Topic: Baby Car Seat !! Posted: 10 December 2009 at 8:15am |
Hi Everyone
Had a delima yesterday Went and brought our first baby pram. We got one from Farmers that has a reversible handle and has all the nuts and bolts. But....The problem we have is that we cant get a Capsule that will fit in the back seat of our car unless we spend another $70 and get a base as our seatbelt is abit short, I have two options, to either spend $70 on a Capsule and another $70 for the base or to spend $249 on a carseat that goes from Birth right up to toddler or more. The problem i have is that i love the capsule's but the baby cant be in them for very long and then in another 6 months time or so i would be forking out for another carseat.
What are your thoughts on this and adive, if you had a captsual for your baby how long did they fit in them for and how much was the babys weight at birth ? And also if you had a carseat for birth to toddler how did you find them ?
Any advice would be really appreciated

Why not just hire a capsule with base from Plunket?
Some come up cheap on Trade Me every now and again too, this is what we did - I think I paid $55 all up including shipping.
My DD2 was 7lb 3oz born and was in a capsule for about 3mos (in a proper carseat now), although my DD2 was in hers for maybe 5-6mos before we switched over.

I had a capsule, my daughter was 3kg, and she was in it until about 6 months. Then we moved her into a convertable carseat (they need to rearface until at least 10kg or 1 year, which ever comes last).
If I was in your shoes, I agree with hippymama, head into plunket and hire a capsule with a base, and use the money you save not buying a capsule on a good carseat.

my son was really tall and out of his capsule by 3 months. i agree with hiring one from plunket, there is no point spending money on things like capsules in case they not gonna fit in them for long

I'm sure you can get seat belt extenders for if you are a bit too large to fit your seat belt so i'm sure you could probably find one of them somewhere that would do the job.

Yeah hiring one from Plunket seems to be the most appropriate idea, and getting the carseat abit after

We went straight into a convertable. I find it easy but that's just me the only thing is that it can be a bit difficult getting baby in an dout with the teether strap, BUT you will be having this problem when their older regardless when they're rear facing. The capsule can be heavy as well so lifting a heavy baby and a heavy capsule all in one go is hard.

I'd probably hire one. I must admit, I LOVE our one that clips into the base in the car. It's just a milano or something but it has made life so much easier having it just slot into the base instead of having to strap it in each time.

I hated the capsule. They aren't light things to carry around when you are sleep deprived and therefore don't really have much energy and you are carrying the capsule plus baby.
